617 into W201.....

Heavy old lump for a W201 to carry round!

Hmmm. Not the best choice of engine IMHO. Be better to find a OM.602--That at least will be a reasonably easy fitting--as they offered it in the 190.....

to fit a 617, probably have to mod up the chassis/crossmember--Have no idea, but it wouldnt be straightforward....

Its not been done by anyone here that I know of. Of course its probably illegal to put an older engine in a chassis too for emission purposes.

It may be a useful learning experience, but that's about it. If you want a 190D, just buy one. You'll end up with an altered vehicle that's worth nothing more than scrap.

It depends on your location and access to other parts/vehicles. If you're in Somalia and only have a 617 then it could be a good choice. Probably not in Chicago or Dallas.

Wasn`t there a thread a year or so back where a member was installing a OM616 into a W201?

Gee, I tried searching using the best keywords I could think of (glutton, punishment, glacial) and I couldn't find anything....

I was going to do this but cancelled the idea, way too much custom fabrication work required. I ended up sourcing an OM601 and putting it in. Way easier, and the 601 is a fun little motor!
