Brass Overflow Tank

So I'm thinking of replacing the old boring plastic overflow tank with a fairly unique brass tank.

Here's the current setup.

Any thoughts?

No.

I think there are a couple of issues. First everything is black and aluminum/silver and one brass item might just be weird. It would be pretty interesting to have everything black and brass, but that's way too much work. The other issue is it becomes harder to monitor coolant because you've pretty much got to wait until things cool down a bit to check.

And there might be other issues...just asking.

Right.. i was kinda just kidding. Definitely a legit concern about the coolant level.

The aesthetics of black and brass wouldn't bother me. Having a coolant overflow tank that would never fail would be awesome.

My '96 E300 (W210) has a (factory) opaque black plastic expansion tank yet somehow it has struggled up to 289,000 miles. I prefer the clear tank of the W124 but the factory decided ("und chu vill like it, ja?) that I don't need to see inside.

I rather like my brass coolant tank.

They look great polished up and it matches the yellow zinc which some of the engine parts were plated.

They were originally painted semi-gloss black like the radiator. They usually last longer than the plastic ones, though they are subject to leaks like the radiator. The downside to them is that you can't see the height of the coolant level unless you remove the cap. This must be why they went to the plastic version in 1974, with the exception of the 6.9. They probably had to use metal ones in the 6.9 because of the heat the engine put out.

Speaking of heat engines put out, I just noticed that your turbocharger and manifolds are awfully close to your plastic coolant tank. It may be worth going to the brass one just for this reason. I can see the heat from the turbo crazing and discoloring the plastic tank.

Hasn't happened yet, but you're right that its very close to the turbo.

How often do you polish yours and what do you use? Have you considered adding a coat of clear to keep it looking nice?

I only polished mine once, right before I installed it. After a year, it has dulled a bit, but isn't too bad. I think that I used steel wool scraps and whatever chrome polish I had left over. The surface has enough tooth to it that it doesn't take long to dull. If it was sanded with gradually finer grades of sandpaper and then polished with a good metal polish, it would probably stay shiny for a very long time. A clearcoat would help if it will adhere to the metal.

wow, that's awesome.
for a level indicator you could put a tee in the lower and upper hoses, and connect them with a glass tube or some clear hose capable of the pressure and temps in the system... any boiler supply shop should have treated glass tubes...

Well decided to go ahead and install the new overflow tank.

It's actually quite a bit shinier than it appears in the picture. I did decide to clearcoat it...maybe a mistake, but at least I won't have to be polishing it all the time.
