How big is your tank????

On my 1978 300SD (W116) the distance between the 'R' and 'F' is 16 gallons and I have a 5 gallon reserve. After the low fuel lamp comes on, I can drive another 150 miles and the car will hold 21 gallons when I have run it totally out of fuel for testing.

Lately I have been getting 525 miles on 18 gallons...almost 30 mpg....and that's at 80 and 90 mph with the A/C on freeway driving on a 220 mile a day (round trip) commute.
