This is how MB built there reputation for quality(pre-Chrysler)

Check out this old episode of Top Gear at the 3:30 mark. I don't think that anyone in Detroit was doing this.

I used to work at an automotive testing facility, and I always wished we had one of those full size suspension test rigs. We had to do ours the old fashioned way, by having drivers drive over rough (and sometimes ROUGH) test courses.

Detroit uses the General Public to do it testing.

Interesting video. the woman is British I guess by the way she talks, and the steering wheel is on the right side.
Where it is filmed, she is driving on the right hand side of the road, wonder where that is?

The punishment that car is getting on the hydraulic stand, simulates the County road I live on.

One thing I enjoyed about the W201 compared to my previous E30 was how much more solid the chassis was. Everything is more rigid, less likely to break or flex and this includes everything in the interior. Theres no wind noise and the rear end is much more planted on bumpy roads. Its failings are the lack of rack an pinion steering and eventually size. Fortunately the W124 is just a stretched and widened W201 which fit the bill perfectly for me. I wish I still had my M42 powered E30. The fun to drive factor is hard to beat with anything short of a Miata but its certainly not daily driver material.
