1987 300td Turbo Leak +
So my turbo is leaking a bit of oil from the top and a bit more from the bottom. Nothing drips onto the pavement because of the splash guards, but it's there. Also have a small leak from front crank seal, and something else on the other side of the block, probably head gasket related. Also a bit from right under the ALDA. All minor IMO.
I get good oil pressure, had the sender replaced and run at 2 at idle and up to 3 when driving. Don't lose much oil either, maybe a half quart every couple of months. Car is daily driver. My question is, how much leak is too much, or better yet, how long can I ignore the turbo leak? (I've heard most leak to some degree with age) I plan to try and take care of the gasket/crank seal at some point but would rather leave the turbo alone. thanks, |
If oil is leaking from the top of the turbo, the turbo oil passages might be clogged up a bit, unless the seal is shot, then it depends how much is leaking.

it could be blowby oil collecting in the housing leaking out.

Turbo Seal Leak - Pics
4 Attachment(s)
Okay Guys, here are some pics as requested. 1. Just a pic of the whole engine, 2. Turbo leak from the top, 3. Turbo leak from front, and 4. ALDA leak (coming from base). I know the actual Turbo is a bit obstructed, but I wanted to take some pics as is before I started disassembling anything.
I also can't get under it right now, but the leak is a bit worse from underneath the turbo, though now that I think about it, it could be just leaking down slowly from the top. Also, if you any of you can tell by looking if I have a Garrett or KKK I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks, |
Blown seal or worn engine dumping oil into turbo and your intake seals need to be replaced.
I have a good turbo I will sell. |
Happy to take it if I need one. Does it matter if it's KKK or Garrett? I can't seem to figure out which one I have. PM me with the price/details if you could.
