300sd clutch fan upgrade.

i looked around for a bit but could find no definitive answer so heres my question.

is there any issue putting a aluminum 9 blade fan from a newer 500sel onto my 82 300sd replacing my 5 blade. I so have a brand new 82 clutch fan not installed. im just looking for better cooling.

the fan turns the wrong direction... verify before you attempt it.

most just get the 83+ plastic blade and the smaller pulley from the SD for the upgrade. this way you get faster turning fan, with more blades for better airflow.

also, if it's the clutch I think it is, the shaft is too long, and it will hit the radiator shroud when installed... I tried it.

I installed an electric fan conversion SO MUCH quieter! The belt driven fan robs hp and makes noise, the electric one barely runs under my driving conditions. No a/c.

Nice if you don't live where it's 120°F but in extreme climates, you need 2000+ cfm and few electric fans are up to the task,. and those that are draw enough amperage to rob HP.

Not if the clutch is working properly. Below 94c it should be nearly freewheeling.

Depends on the chassis number. My '83 300D has this:

Fan clutch Metal vs Plastic??

000-200-04-22 Fan Clutch (Behr)
110-200-03-23 9-Bladed Plastic Fan
