Need Help - Star Diagnostics on a 98 E300D

I have been trying to run star diagnostics on my 1998 E300 Turbodiesel. I have used the laptop, software and multiplexer on my 2004 CLK 320 Cabriolet with great success.

On the 2004, I use the OBD-II connector and on the 1998, I have been using the 38 pin connector.

Everytime I try to talk to a control unit, I get an error that it can't connect. Am I using the right cable for this vehicle - do I have to provide additional power to the cable with the inline power connector - which is the cable from the laptop to the multiplexer and I am currently using the one without the inline power injector.

I haven't been able to connect to one control unit - the car runs, but does have a tranny code that needs to be cleared.

Can anyone help?

I don't personally have SDS but I have a knock off that has most of the functions. My software would connect OBDII to most any other car, Benz or otherwise if it was newer, say 2002 or so. I seemed to always have problems connecting and accessing all of the advanced functions on my '98 and it kind of pissed me off since I spend so much money for it.

Anyway, after several revisions, I think what I have is working pretty well now if I use the ISO9141-2 interface protocol rather than CAN or having the software auto detect. I don't know if it helps in your situation and if you have that kind of control over SDS but I though I'd throw that out there.

98 is kinda a transition year. I occasionally run into the same problem dealing with the 98 model year. The best device to use on it is the MB HHT which is pretty hard to find anymore.

The software brings up a PC version of the HHT.... Is there anything that I can do? The nearest MB mechanic with tools is over 80 miles away and I am stuck in 2nd gear....

Find someone with the HHT system.

Or since you are in the US stop by the next time you are in the neighborhood and I'll see if I can help you out with it.
