I would be very afraid that the oil cooler hose will just pop off the cooler. The nut is steal but the oil cooler nut is aluminum...I would think the threads are destroy thus the threads wouldn't be strong enough to hold the hose on plus the pressure on a thousand mile trip.....I would look for the closets pick n pull, grab a can of pb blaster, a small torch for heat and pull another oil cooler....

when I find a leak on these fittings, I clean the cooler fitting with ULTRA fine scotch bright, and put it back together... always stops the leak.

Hope your Band-Aid holds up for the trip home. If you want to repair the bad threads on the cooler, there is the Screwed Nipple repair.

Oil Cooler Repaired

are the oil cooler fittings replaceable by themselves?

X2. aka flare fittings. I'd suggest look at the fittings for cracks with a magnifier and flare seating surfaces for nicks. If no cracks and minor nicks, scuff it up smooth with Scotchbrite or 600 wet dry paper.

the trip home went quite well in regards to the oil cooler line....NO leaks at all!

I plan to purchase the replacement nipples and redo a spare oil cooler I have in stock. The permatex and self sealing tape held up quite well!

Just came across this thread and want to give an update. The permatex and survival tape is still holding quite well. Have maybe 20k miles since the "fix"
