Urgent. 81' Cylinder Head with SLS pump. Transferable?

I just drove a good three hours for a cylinder head. It's replacing the head off a 78 non turbo. This head I'm looking at has the SLS pump attached. Is there a possibility I could still use it?

The 78 non turbo will have different pre-chambers from the '81 => for these to match you need to have the right pistons and pre-chamber match. Read chapter 05-117 in the FSM.

You can in principle change the pre-chambers from the '78 into the '81 though (I think) but the chances of success are not very high mainly because you are likely to break something trying to remove the pre-chambers...

...I think it is possible to blank off the SLS pump hole and ignore that feature - but you need to check with some one else 'cos I'm not 100% sure about that.

If the SLS head is a non turbo, then you can use it.
Make sure it has the idle gear and shaft.
Just use a cover plate from a 116/117 to cover the opening for the pump.
If it is a turbo head, then the pre chambers are bigger.

My non turbo (built at the end of December 1980) OM617 has the same pre-chambers as the turbo and the star shape in the piston crowns - not all of the non turbos are the same - you still need to check to make sure you don't fit a head with the wrong piston and pre-chamber configuration whether it is turbo or non turbo

Turbo and 1980 on non turbo pre chambers may look the same, but turbo chambers are 16mm Φ and non turbo chambers are 14mm Φ.
