bleeding brakes with pads out oops

First time doing brakes.

Replaced flex hoses. Took out pads, went to bleed brakes, thinking may as well bleed with pads out to make sure no fluid gets on them. Bleeding RR brake, noticed brake fluid leaking from both front calipers.

Without the pads in, the pistons apparently went too far forward. Does anyone have experience with this goof? Did a simple job just turn into a caliper rebuild, or should I try installing the new pads and expect the piston seals to do their job?

The take a chance repair is to push the pistons into the caliper.

The right way is to remove the dust boots and piston, clean any rust grit out of the area, reinstall the piston and dust boot.

A caliper rebuild isn't needed when a piston pops out, but at that point you are half way to a rebuild.
