1992 300D NEED PARTS FENDER BENDER

I drive a 1992 300D 2.5 TURBO and last Friday I had an accident and damaged the front passenger side fender, you know, the one with the vent for the air intake... My question is, where can I find one of these fenders and is the inner fender/wheel well unique on a 300D or is it the same as the gasoline models? Another part I might be looking for are the vacuum valves that are placed directly behind that headlight as they are most likely damaged as well. It seems like the models with this fender are pretty rare around where I live. I have looked in the Pick N Pull yards around here, but I've had no luck. The other body parts I need are pretty easy to come by though.

I uploaded some pictures of the damage to my car and the other car I hit. It sure seems like the Honda got off easy, but underneath the bumper is pretty ugly.

I've got one, same color even.

I do not have hood or headlight parts though.

I went through the same a couple months ago with my 92. You can find the post on here. Its amazing how soft these cars are in comparison to the w123.
But in any case i have a good head light i can ship you if interested let me know, cheap. I know how you feel. That stuff wont be very easy to find.
What part of Cali are you in I have some connections may be able to find you something.

Thanks for the quick replies!

I will have to call up those places tomorrow. I plan on having the majority of the front end repainted since the paint on the front of the car had all of these tiny cracks in it.

I read your thread about your accident Ed and wanted to mention that the car looked great after it was finished. I wanted to know if the inner fender area on the passenger side of '90-'95 diesel models is in fact different than other models. Also, did you just by the whole front end from a wrecking yard? I'm interested in being able to get a donor front end for myself.

As far as the other body parts go, I think I can gather them up from the local Pick N Pull yards and thankfully today when I started taking it apart I found that I didn't damage the air filter box or those vacuum elements attached to it!

Well, I went and looked at some cars in a wrecking yard today and I'm glad to see that no matter the model, the inner fender on the passenger side has the hole cut for the intake from the factory. Just thought I'd clarify this for everyone since I couldn't find a clear answer.

Also, does anyone have a pair of black door panels for the front doors on a '92 W124?

More questions...

So, does anyone have the heat shield that goes between the air filter box and the exhaust side of the engine for a 602 turbo that they are willing to sell?

Also, I need to find a new fan shroud since my fan put a a hole straight through it... I was interested in getting a two-piece fan shroud to replace it. Was there ever a two-piece shroud made that would be deep enough to fill the gap between the radiator and fan with the 5 cylinder engine on a W124?

And look what I found hiding behind the auxiliary fan shroud! Getting all of that out of there should help improve condenser and radiator performance.

Consider the opportunities:

- I'm not aware of a 2-piece shroud for the 2.5. A 603 2-piece shroud from the dealer was $70 a couple of years ago so 1-piece 2.5 shroud shouldn't be prohibitively expensive.

- ditch the vacuum stuff behind the passenger headlight - Wastegate actuator swap for OM602.962 - revisited

- get proper Euro headlights, even Depo knockoffs but not TYC, and enjoy proper lighting. You can use headlight wipers from a 94-95 124 or get blanking valence panels from the dealer since you're going to paint the front end anyway.

- IIRC a '95 E300 front passenger fender is a suitable replacement, not that '95 E300s litter wrecking yards. Have you checked car-part.com?

- upgrade the front clip to the 94-95 facelift look if you're into that sort of thing.

I plan on keeping it all pretty original as far as the body goes and personally I prefer the pre-facelift look, especially with the headlight wipers.

I have checked on car-part.com and there are only three of those fenders in California. I checked out the one in Ranch Cordova and it was bent all to hell, so I passed. There is one in Antioch that I have yet to see and there is one about 300 miles south of me for $300, which I think is overpriced... Isn't the going rate for one of those fenders in good shape about $150?

The stock vacuum/boost system on this car worked perfectly before the accident. I thought that conversion was simply to fix the stock system when it goes wrong. Is there any performance to be gained by going to the mechanical waste gate over a properly functioning stock system?

I prefer the pre-facelift look myself but with Euro headlights. Darker amber Euro corners are starting to grow on me.

Have you checked the price of a fender from MB? It might cost less than shipping and prepping a used fender.

The conversion means there's no vacuum system to go wrong, say on your way to Tahoe

I may switch to the euro headlights later on, but I don't want to do it until I have the whole euro headlight package with all of the parts to set up the auto-leveling and the correct wipers.

I haven't checked the price from the dealer yet, but I'm going to call them up right now since you mentioned it.

Just called and got a price. $332 and they only have one in California! I can't believe how rare these fenders seem to be.

Facelift wipers are the same as Euro wipers so sourcing is less tedious. Or did I say that already?

If you have a part number, run it by Pelican Parts, the site sponsor and check with a discount card carrying MBCA member for a better deal.

Conclusion

Thought I'd finally let everyone know how this situation panned out. I got the car back on the road again a few months ago and it's looking pretty good other than a slightly cracked front bumper. I don't happen to have any pictures of the car finished at the moment, but I'll post some up when I get some time.

Thanks to everyone who helped me source the parts and get me the information I needed to get the car back together.

How much did you end up paying for the right fender?
