saved from crusher 1983 240d acquisition, couple questions

Hey guys, I saved this car from getting crushed I watched the price drop until it was just above scrap price on my local craigslist. Id like to keep as many of these old mercs on the road so I bought it even though I don't need it lol

The car is a 1983 240d, the engine runs great,, almost no blow by at all and no leaks!!! I haven't done a valve adjustment or anything to yet other than a wash, and put the spare on and took off a wheel arch(thank god no rust!!)

I have a few questions though if anyone could help.

1)Transmission shifts but at very high rpm, sometimes the shift from 2nd to 3rd is fine other times its high RPM also but 3rd to 4th is always almost redline and let off the gas and then it shifts.

2)Is a front wheel bearing something that I can do myself with basic tools? Its not terrible yet but I know its bad and going.

3)Anyone live in GA that has some crappy wheels on the cheap so I can ditch the current ones? looks terrible IMO

I have a set of OEM steel wheels from a 79 300D. As far as transmission, there's an adjustment this might be before the bowden cable, as I believe there's linkage going to the transmission. Chances are someone messed up the linkage, or there's way too much slop in the linkage ends.

Max - you need to buy the one I have on the Atlanta CL right now - 1987 Mercedes Benz 300d 6 cylinder turbo diesel. It's a good, solid, rustfree car with decent looking wheels...

I haven't seen many diesels on the Atlanta CL go very low - my 124 seems to be way lower than any of them, including the older ones in bad shape!

nice I like the steelies, how much? tires?

I need to get under the hood and look for the bowden cable, my 78 is a lot more simple. I know there is place on the firewall where some linkage goes into the firewall(not from the pedal) and there is some white colored bushing that is rotted away.

Post pictures of the engine compartment so we can see what is messed up. The very very high rpm shifts are mostly due to a stuck kick down switch. It is right behind the gas pedal sometimes the carpet mat gets on top of it....other times they just need to be replace. Simply unplug it and see if there is a difference.

Those wheels are so gross they're awesome. They'd go great with a cheezy body kit & color changing paint!

If you have a harbor freight press (everyone should own one anyway), a hammer, punch, and a vise changing the wheel bearings isnt hard. If you dont change the races then you dont even need more than an allen wrench and a couple other hand tools.

are the races important? I appreciate you posting about the wheel bearing! I was gonna ask again!

I unplugged the sensor that cooljay mentioned so I will test it tomorrow and see if that helps.

I will post pics of the engine bay tomorrow

Hey mad max, I have a set of 78 14" steel wheels you could have for free no problem. I am in marietta, the wheels are in lithia springs, if you're serious I can get them but I don't have tires for free though. Also have some hubcaps. I do have a Fag brand new in box wheel bearing as well. Shouldn't be too hard to drift the races out...

I didn't replace the races, but inspect what you have. Look for pitting, galling, or any visual issues.

To reinstall the outer bearing, a dial indicator cimes in very handy, yet is expensive.
