I check my engine oil every
How often do you check the engine oil level ?
I know someone will ask: My personal vehicles average every 200 - 400 miles for checking the dipstick, with many variables. . |
Not often enough. That may change however, pending successful development of an oil level warning system. I built a coolant level warning system which is going through beta testing currently. The engine oil level warning will be a lot more challenging than the coolant warning I developed.
|
The engine type is important data for this poll IMO.
My 617.952 I'd check weekly cause it dripped some and like most, consumed some oil. The 606.962 usually went 16-18K between changes and consistiently needed one qt added at 8-9k miles. I expect the Bluetec will be similar to the 606. |
Depends.....
When driving a known vehicle.....only at fill ups.
EDIT: I check the oil during a pre-purchase inspection. On a newly purchased car, I check it every time I drive it if I see drips underneath. |

I am finally to this point on the 280E. I have not needed to add any oil yet... Knock on wood. |
Depends on the vehicle. With my 420 I don't really need to check it between the 5k changes, it burns none and loses none. My 300SD I check around once a month, as it leaks some (minimal, less than 1 qt per 5,000 miles) My 601 I check around every 2,000 miles or so....it doesn't seem to lose/burn much of anything either. Wifes TDI can go 10k without needing to be touched.
Brother's E320 is tight as a drum too, he's put 3k on it since buying it and the oil level is unchanged and its transparent clean. Amazing. We decided in a 7-8k change for his. |
I loves it I do - I checks it all the time! I smell it and sniff it and fondle it and loves it and loves it and loves it...
|
Really just depends, Roy. Might be months when I only drive the car a couple hundred miles a month. Or, every day or two when running cross-country, or driving locally a few hundred miles a week. The answer is every few hundred miles for me, regardless whether my diesel car or diesel truck.
My 606 had a low oil indicator light, as does my 648 - so I'm covered w/o popping the hoods/bonnets. The 648 doesn't have a dipstick, so that is done in the instrument cluster check system. |
I usually check it when I get fuel which is about every six days it doesn't burn or leak but its good habit. Ill fuel, pop hood, check, start car stand there and stare at running motor for a few seconds then get in and drive off. Almost once a week im under the hood poking at something so I usually pull the stick and look then too. I guess its a habit from working on old beater trucks. The other reason i look when fueling it to see if the filter has water in it. Clear filters are awesome.

I check it a few times over the OCI. My car does not burn / use oil, plus there is the low oil level warning light.
I do always check the level before a long trip. -J |
Oil is good, Oil is great, It's the fluid WE all appreciate!
I check it when I refuel, I check it when I open the hood for any reason, and I check it when I'm buying a car, and pretty much anytime I feel bored... |

Oil change on what date? How many miles and what weight? For ever and ever so much debate! Makes us peachers bloody irate.............:P |

the important plan is to verify the oil is maintained in time. |
dripping, or burning, leaking, seeping and flowing...
the worst part isn't the not knowing, it's the slowing of the fluid that keeps our motors going. so... if you wish to prevent a towing, it's best to keep an eye on the commings and goings of that black fluid that is most important for our tooing and froing... the iron and plastic, the aluminum and the glass it's all just a draping for our oohs and ohings... so to prevent the most distastefull slowing, I STRONGLY suggest a frequent showing because, no amount of glowing will soften the throwing and blowing of an oil level left unknowing |

30 40 50 weight on which i will pontificate,
The ever pumping pistons churning for just a bit of lube they're yearning Delo, Moly, Mobil-1, Do you best get this job done? Back the bolt swap the filter, Slack in the task might well kill her Ever on the cycle spins twisting my lip making me grin That happy clatter means her thist's been satisfied Come on baby lets go and drive! Log the miles write them down As the odometer spins ever round Day months and miles go by What should be my OCI? Pop the hood another time Checkin' the stick helps my peace of mind So boys check it alot, Keep it changed and drain it hot, That greasy black slick and slippery Comon y'all aint no mystery |
SO MANY POETS OF OIL!
HA!
 |
Every time I have the hood open which equates to weekly or more.
|
if looking under the car to see how much oil has drained out counts, I check the oil seepage daily, but i check the dipstick at every fuel up, approx 250-350 mile intervals
|
I rarely check my oil between the 6,000 mile service interval, maybe on occasion when I refuel, but I look under the car everytime I drive it for any signs of leakage.
I have been spoiled by gapless rings.... |

When I'm bored. Ill think to myself "hey I haven't checked my oil in a while" and ill check it. My 603 uses about 1/4 quart between 6k changes over the past 70k miles so I don't find it necessary to check it often.
|
I have a spreadsheet for each car with oil changes, oil filter changes, and other maintenance tasks. For my Diesels I would do oil every 2500 miles and filters every 5000.
The gas cars can go longer between oil changes, but get the filter changed at each oil change. I could count on the Volvos to not use any oil, the Chevy to use a quart every 200 miles but Monika is an unknown. Until I get her pattern I check her oil just about every time I take her out. She just got nice new Rotella 15w40 and a new filter... |
On my gas DD I check at every fillup, or if I've revved over 4k. Under 4k she doesn't burn anything, over 4k it likes to drink oil. There's nothing *wrong* with my car, but there are oh so many things that aren't right :p
|
Summer everything leaks abit faster:D.No oil leaks ,just powersteering for right now ,if the hood is up it gets checked .My 617 runs very smooth and consumes about a qrt a month ,somewhere around 1700 miles. If it has blowby it is very little ,400k and counting.DDee pppeeeendable

that's opposite of what I was taught... |

During the 60's and 70's, many manufacturers recommended a filter replacement every other oil change. I change the oil in the 300SD somewhere between 6,000 and 8,000 miles. |
yeah, but that was not for diesels with the soot loading was it?
|
Usually once between oil changes since I have most of the oil leaks fixed. I'm down to seeping oil cooler lines and that will be it. Sometimes I check it as it drains out when I change it. Oil and filter are changed at 3-4K on average.
