sunroof leaks

Pouring rain at lunchtime and I noticed slow drip from right front corner of sunroof. Opened and closed just to make sure there is a tight seal seems OK.

There is some rust along the edge of the sunroof and the gasket(?) seal around the sunroof looks chopped up.

How old anybody go about repairing this...I went on the parts shop and does not look like they have anything appropriate.

Denis O,

The sunroof "seals" are really for air noise mitigation and not real water tight seals. The leaking you are experiencing is most likely due to the drain lines in the "A" and "C" pillars being clogged.

If you notice the openning in the steel part of the roof is larger than the openning in the interior. This makes room for the slides and guides the roof moves on, and is how the normal leakage of rainwater and melting snow are directed away from the interior, and outward to the front and rear drains on either side. If you are experiencing leakage it is most likely because debris from trees or other sources has collected in the drain lines, and, depending on how you are parked the water leaks into the car before it can make its way to one of the other drains.

You can find the "A" pillar drains pretty easily just by looking with the roof open. I have cleaned these with compressed air as well as with a flexible metal rod.

The rust is another matter, and can be fixed with standard techniques. A new rubber seal may help with the quantity of normal leakage, and it may make the roof quieter. If you cannot find them from Fastlane, call the Partsshop number. If they really don't carry these things I am sure the dealer can order it for you. Good Luck, Jim

Dennis O I've had exactly this problem I think you will find Jim has hit the nail on the head.Once you've cleared the drains you might also lubricate the sliders, the best lube is the stuff the MB dealers sell.Bear
