Transmission fluid for w123

Hello, Has anyone used the Shell Spirax S3 ATF MD3 transmission fluid for their cars automatic tranny? I bought some for the 85 300TD and wanted to ask before dropping the old stuff. I think the previous owner had Mobil Synthetic in it, but am really not sure what was in there. The only reason I suspect he was using Mobil 1 is that I found a 1 litre bottle in the hatch. Whatever was in there still looks and smells clean. I want to do a filter change at the same time of course.

This car is approaching 600,000kms on the original tranny which in my limited experience is unheard of. With that in mind I would rather not change brands but have read that Mobil have changed their formula anyways. I have also read to stay away from anything other than dextron 3. I read of someone using type f but the car shifts firm enough as it is. I fear using type f because that would really be changing up on a good thing.

The other factor is cost....Mobil 1 would cost me over $120 compared to this shell stuff which was $50. I also am considering that this tranny could go any day and don't want to spend a pile of money on dextron 3.

Just really looking for some feedback on if this is compatible...says it is for use in all vehicles where dextron 3, Ford Mercon or Allison c4 fluids are specified.

Thank You.
