Does anyone know if Iskra stuff is any good?

This reman unit lasted four months.
Before installing a reman alternator, get it bench tested first! I have owned and maintained many old used cars over the years and never had to buy or replace an alternator, just certain parts. Parts I have replaced the most are:

1. alternator brushes (most often),
2. alternator bearings (second most often).

One item that often gets overlooked in alternator not charging is the tightness of the belt. It has to be tight enough so that you can't turn the pulley by hand. If you can slip the pulley/ belt, it won't charge.

It might be worth noting (perhaps too late) but there is a higher output alternator available that will mount up to the 617 that is in the 300SD. Its a 115 Amp output alternator. This same alternator can be installed on the m116 and m117 as well. I just finished this upgrade a few weeks ago on our 420SEL.

My new Iskra will be here this afternoon.

Stretch, do you have a thread on rebuilding one?

I still have the original, the bearing was screaming, so I had it replaced with this rebuilt in America Bosch unit. I had purchased this years ago.

Yes, I know about higher output alts, but I don't even have a radio in that car, the clock doesn't work either.

I have another cluster, but can't remove the one in the car, so I went to the dealer and got the puller.

Sounds like a good idea.

I feel these belts are too tight currently.

After you get your second reman alt installed, check that it is not being overloaded. A reman alt that fails in 4 months is unusual if everything is normal.

I would suggest getting one of those digital voltmeters that plug into the cig lighter and keep an eye on the voltage while you drive. While running, it should not go below `13 to 13.4 volts. If you see 11 to 12 volts, chances are the glow plugs are coming on or you have a short somewhere. Put your hand on the alt casing after driving, it should not be overly hot.

My "new" Iskra unit, well, that's Motor City Reman says, yet there is no word Iskra on the unit, box or paperwork, is installed, the battery light comes on when first turning the key and is charging at 14.33v.

I'll try and find one of those cig lighter volt meters.

now that's strange, for the older units it should have stamped label made in Yugoslavia, for the newer one made in Slovenia..or just a Star in circle logo.

Turns out it's a World Power Systems unit made in guess where?

China, we'll see how long it lasts.

I've been lied to before...

Well not everything that comes out of that country is crap - it really depends on what the instructions were. If the instructions were "as cheap as" then you might need some serious finger crossing and rabbit foot kissing - only time will tell.
