Decision made (for now)

I'm going to see if the gearbox spare parts turn up by Wednesday - if they do it is game on - then I'll have two days to get 'er done. If not I'll put it back together again and take my chance with the tow truck.

In the mean time I'll fiddle with those pins again and see if I can get anywhere with out causing serious damage.

Well let down again - bloody parts suppliers. I doubt if the bits will get to me before Friday so I have no choice but to put everything back together again. Can't fix it with out parts...

That Dalai Lama fellow sounds pretty smart.

I voted "Something Else". Take alternate transport to England if you don't get the car done in time. I've seen a few Top Gear challenges in which James and Richard take a train or a ferry somewhere while racing Jeremy in a car. Jeremy usually gets there first, but the other blokes seem to have a more pleasant trip. Then when you have time, find another head without the corrosion issues or just swap in a diesel engine. Petrol engines are for motorbikes and sports cars.

Check your email Stretch.
You can pull out the motor with tranny, but you need a engine lift with an lever on it.

Thanks for the info - I will be taking the engine out once I've got those bloody spares from Germany but even I do not wish to remove the engine more than once. I'll fix the gearbox - replace the differential and repair the head gasket when I get back from England.

I dug out my engine crane yesterday and I even found the load balancer so I should be able to do the gearbox and engine in one go. I see a lot of people manage to remove the cross member at the front of the chassis - I guess they are cutting them out. I don't think I'll be cutting the chassis to get the engine in and out.

I got the engine and everything back together today - I had to go and buy some cheap temporary parts because the ones I ordered still haven't turned up. Really I don't get it - all they have to do is pick up the part off of a shelf and put it in a box and write my name and address on it and give it to the courier. How hard can it be? They're a bunch of %%%%ing retards...

...I "did" Eurostar in February this year with my youngest daughter. I don't fancy my chances with three children on public transport. This head gasket has to hold - there's nothing else for it!

Don't you have anything like "Bar's Leaks" in the Netherlands? Some sort of silicon silicate solution to add to the cooling system to buy some time?

Oh - you have oil in coolant...not sure it will work that way...

Yeah that's what I was thinking.

I'm just going to take some tools with me so I can do a coolant flush and a change if it looks like it is getting out of hand. Water will probably find its way the other way at some point or other in which case I'll then do the leak stopper stuff. Self amalgamating tape will be traveling with me too.

With this temperatures we have now, plain water will work aswell.
If your going to pull the engine, maybe i can help you with it.

The 190E 2.6 and the 190D 2.5 turbo has removable cross member

Oh that's why - I guess those 6 cylinder engines are a tad longer...

...penny has dropped...

I got the next best thing to water for the coolant system - cheapo coolant from the Gamma. Plain tap water might actually be better for the coolant system in this case!

Isn't Holland to England mostly by boat

But seriously, if you can get across the channel, presumably after that if you have a break down, public transportation or a rental car should not be too onerous.

Yep I have insurance - lots of it.

The boat is a pain in the arse so I'm doing the shortest distance => Calais to Dover. I could do Hook of Holland to Harwich but then you spend most of your life chugging along at 30 mph because they want to save fuel and sell you as much junk you don't need on board. The roads from Harwich to anywhere else in England are pretty bad. Which is another reason for taking the other route although Utrecht and Antwerp are dreadful places along the way to Northern France...

You're so good at taking things to bits I'd think the question was academic. Almost sounds like it was engineered to have to pull the engine to work on it.
