Bummer on the lack of Passat wagons. I was hoping for that to be my wife's next car.
I think there is a lack of clarity on the function of DEF or the extra Diesel fuel for NoX adsorber regeneration. Essentially, they do the exact same thing. Adsorbers hold the NoX on the surface of the adsorber and have to periodically be cleaned off so there's room to grab more NoX. Either system just raises the temp of the adsorber medium and kicks off the catalytic reaction, turning the NoX into N2 and O2, which quickly turns into H2O when combined with atmospheric H2. So it really doesn't matter which system - you're either buying DEF or a little more Diesel. BTW - the FE hit for the Diesel fuel system (at least on heavy duty Diesels) is about 2% and that's from repeatable lab testing. I'm not sure about current technology but in years past the European versions required a trip to the dealer for regeneration every so many miles (not sure of the interval) instead of the on-board regeneration system. In the US it was decided that that was unacceptable as we can't even get people to check their oil so how the heck can we expect them bring the car back for service of the NoX adsorber? Sad but true. I absolutely don't doubt there are many high mileage common rails out there. But years from now will be a different story, not to many people can rebuild a peizo or heui injector with a bottle jack and wrench. Or maybe Im just prejudiced against new stuff. Most likely the latter. I like mechanical I dont get along well with anything after obd-0.

MY ML CDI is over 180 k miles now and only let me down once when the crank sensor went under warranty.
I just keep changing the oil and replacing tires. Run flat tires would be a deal breaker for me on any car. |

2014 Mazda 6 has a diesel wagon.
2012+ Subaru has a Legacy diesel wagon. Just not sold in North America. I'd buy either, the first one that shows up here, cash on the hood. I had a Passat, non-diesel. Will never buy another VW again, don't care if it's diesel or cold fusion.

Mazda has a low compression Diesel engine that supposedly does not use any DEF.
I could have sworn I saw a Diesel Hyundai or Kia the other day on the highway, though I could not make out the badge clearly enough and drive safely at the same time.

We have tier 4 Kubotas and Cummins common rail diesels with 5000 hours so far. No real issues except operators not paying attention to the DPF (diesel particulate filter) display.

Good to hear, Duby. That squares with our lab results but I acknowledge that on-road experience can vary wildly from lab studies.

Modern diesel's may be complicated and needy, but its hard to argue with a 2 liter engine that can break the tires loose in 2nd when rolling at 15-20mph. Super torque!
As I have told my wife, keeping the TDI long term hinges completely on reliability....if it has ANY major (or even moderate) issues during the warranty period, I am trading it shortly after said event takes place and going back to MB. I have 617-like expectations, so if it fails to meet them, it goes. Even the slightly more modern OM601 in my 190 has nearly 250k on it, only repair the engine has needed is delivery valve seals and new injector nozzles....not even $150.
