Conversation with Neighbor

My neighbors (about two houses down on the intersecting street) appear to be in their 60's and the elderly mother of one of them (close to 100!) owns a 190E 2.6 (looks like smoke silver). She no longer drives, but apparently likes to keep the car and be driven around in it.

So I guess our neighbor (the man) has been watching my somewhat evolving collection of Benzes over time and approached me the other day. He introduced himself, indicated that the mother can't keep the car forever, and that perhaps I might be interested at some point. 80,000 miles, looks to be in perfect condition.

So should I be interested?

Is the Pope Catholic?

Yes yes yes yes!

I suppose this might make a viable replacement for the '92, especially if you are indeed facing major repairs. How soon are they looking to get rid of it? I know that the answer is no because you don't own it yet, but do you have pictures?

Is your neighbor asking you to drive his mother around in their 80k mile 190E 2.6?

Of course the likelihood of her selling it for what I'd be willing to pay for it is probably slim.

Fair price?

Good price?

That's how I got my 91 300D. Saw it at my dad's retirement community....asked him to keep an eye on it, to inquire periodically. Eventually the day came when the woman's children persuaded her to give up driving. So I got it in 2009 in essentially perfect condition, 77,000 miles, for $4500.

I like my 190D, but from reading the 190 forums about all the problems folks have with the fuel systems, I'm not sure I would want to take on a gas model. It will most likely also have all the other known 190 issues (climate control, window regulators, blower motor, non-overdrive tranny, suspension issues) and the fuel mileage is disappointing for such a small car.

I've seen some really nice looking 190E's go on Ebay in the $1,500-$2,000 range.

you'd really be buying it from the 60 year old guy, does he seem like he knows the cars worth? or is he more likely to view it as his mother/mother in laws older car?
Im betting if its his moms car, the price will be higher than mother in laws car.

This could go either way. You could get a 150% markup for sentimental reasons, or you could get a super discount for pragmatic lets get rid of it / going to a good home reasons.

My grandmother sold her late 90s much loved 60k 5-speed mint accord for about 700 bucks since it "was going to a good home".
