W123 1985 - What fits in this hole?

I am in process of putting interior of my 300D back together. It's a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, but without the picture on the box

I so far have just one thing I can't recall. There is a hole with a slot above it on each door silll, just about opposite the rear bolt clip. There is a hole in carpet, so something must have gone in there! There is another hole slightly further back and I assume that is where the seat belts attach. I have the bolts with sleeves etc for there.

I think that slot is for the B-pillar trim attachment.

The 123 FSM is on line and you can also look at the line drawings in EPC if you need help figuring out how things go back together.

I had already tried EPC and the shop manual, but could not locate that area.

If that is for trim attachment, I guess I should have some trim pieces somewhere . Will have to go look! ADDED: No additional TRIM pieces!

There is no slot in carpet, just a hole matching the hole below the slot.

MY GUESS: The slot could be for a nut assembly something like the seat hold downs. The hole in that location is perhaps for a different design of seat belt? No scratch marks perhaps indicating the slot and hole were not used. If my guess is correct, then presumably there was some type of plastic rivet that blocked the carpet hole. But I don't have them.

On early (or maybe even late) 240's without height adjustment, the seat base has a bolt going through the side into the sill in that area. For seat bases that have height adjustment tracks, there is no hole in the carpet.

I think its late models, my 81 had the bolt....my 1978...has height adjusters on bolt seats and no bolt but the hole is in the carpet and you can see the threads. Every time I look at them, I always wonder why they are there...

I had a PM from a new member (MBOCD - see below) that confirms what you guys are saying. My 85 does have holes in the carpet. EPC shows the holes, so I guess they made them all the same. I would have expected a plug to cover the hole, but there were none there and this is the first time seats have been out of car. Anyway, I am going to put a piece of aluminum tape over the holes before replacing the carpet.

Thanks for the input! Hoping to have interior back together in a day or two.

Hey I'm just registered so my posts won't show up until a modeartor checks them I guess!

I'm pretty sure if that hole is located on the inside of the rocker channel just ahead of the B-Pillar it is for a securing bolt used with seats that have no height adjustment. There is a long bolt that goes from the inside of the outer rear seat rail frame support, out the other side, then there is a sleeve which slides over that covering the threads and serving as a spacer and then that end of the bolt threads into a captive nut which is suspended down through that slot above the hole.
