ROFL... I have a 500SL
While shuffling auto insurance coverage at the agents office.
My 240D failed to come up on their screen.. Sorting through all of my vehicle registrations, UREKA.. For some unknown reason, their system shows the 240D VIN# as a 500SL. They assure me the insurance cost is for the 240D, not a 500SL. I requested they fix it to show correctly. After several calls by my agent to the insurance home office, it should only take 3 - 7 months before the correction shows.. Is it just me, or is the generic company level of service and competence dropping in the toilet. .

It took me a few minutes to get them straightened out when I bought my '71 250 with the straight numeric VIN. I didn't have that problem a few years earlier with my '77 240D. They never got the impression I was driving an R107 in either case. The companies are gear toward newer cars, since that's what they see most often. A hiccup here and there with an old car is to be expected. Grade them on how quickly and well they can get their ducks in a row.

You physically visit an office to deal with your car insurance? Its 2013!
And yes, competence is dropping rapidly in this modern age.

Well, what are you waiting for? Cut the roof off of the 240D and buy a new badge: voilà -- the first four-door R107!

I have had this problem off and on since the late 1990s.
When I had a Volvo 740 Turbo (2.3l 4 cyl) it was insured as a 760 (V6). Significant as back then the word 'turbo' usually made a big difference in rates. According to the company, however no such thing as a Volvo 740 Turbo ever existed. My 1979 300sd was a 450se for some time. My current 1980 300td is described as a sedan in their database.

X2. Never any problems with them, and they deal with the other guy's insurance company when you get hit.

I do not have any military background, so no USAA is available for me. I do have State Farm, and they have no issues w/ my 300D.

White is black and black is white . . . .Rivers and seas boiling! . . . Forty years of darkness! . . . . .The dead rising from the grave! . . . . . .Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!
I'd hardly call the mix-up a disaster, it's a old relatively obscure car that likely predates any cross make VIN standard. |

*About 'USAA?' Their premiums are off-the-charts high according to many, many formerly loyal customers. You fellas might want to do a check six on what you're paying, and switch carriers. Loyalty to particular carriers/agents is not worth the higher rates, when you could be saving a bundle by switching. ALL, insurance companies will creep upward with your premium rates - not just USAA or Geico to name two that will jack rates when you're not even aware of it happening because you're not shopping coverage.
