Why do you still got egr on this thing? you might think about taking off the intake and cleaning out the inside --and the ports of crudd, you would notice a difference in the power.

Intake was removed and cleaned. EGR stuff is there but none of the vacuum hoses are connected to it. By my understanding, this disables the EGR? Block off plates and such would be nice, for now I have other priorities for my time and funds, so long as the EGR is disabled I'm fine with the plumbing being there.

New alt? 150 amps continuous duty, 80 amps at idle. Going to take measurements when I get home. |

Just an update.
Was going to pull the trigger on the 22si and get started fabbing brackets. On a whim I called the local junk yard - 300SD alternator for 35 bucks. OK, I bite. Got her installed and running. 13.4 volts. Darn, that ain't going to charge anything. Do these have an adjustable regulator or a voltage sensing wire like the Delcos? Drove it to my girlfriend's house and to the grocery store and back. Noticeably slower starts every time - she ain't charging. Fooey. |

As far as I know you can't adjust the output on an alternator but a new rectifier (if it is that - test first) isn't too expensive. I assume the alternator shaft was spinning nicely when you bought it - the pulleys are nicely aligned and the belt is tight etc etc...
This might help PeachPartsWiki: Refreshing the Alternator

Thanks Stretch.
Yes I checked all that before buying the alternator, and had an auto parts store test it before I installed it. Tested good...... Found this link, will probably give it a shot. I'm a sales rep for an electronic component distributor, we have literally millions of diodes in stock. BOSCH Voltage regulator mod I will also check voltage at the alt itself and maybe run a new battery cable. |

I do have that trigger wire hooked up.
I think I'm going to go straight to the 22si. I could easily spend more time and money and work mucking around with fixes that might work than it would take to just go straight to the solution that will work. |

Drove it home from my girlfriend's house this morning, then hauled a load of my buddy's stuff to storage, now back at my girlfriend's house. Has started fine all day today.

From the pics, you have a lot of electrical commitments in all the awesome lighting you have going on. Maybe your loads won't tolerate anything less than 100% capability in a charging system? The bigger alt probably wouldn't be a bad long term idea, but glad it seems to be settling down and working!

Thank you JB3. The lighting is mostly stock, I think the main power consumers are the electric fuel pump, vacuum pump, and cooling fan, all of which were mechanical in the stock MBZ.
Took it for a decent spin out to my father-in-law-to-be's house through lots of hills. Power is ridiculous, if this is all the better this thing can do then this project is officially concluded and will be for sale soon. WOT for minutes at a time, only making 8psi boost and EGT's only up to 1000 deg and no black smoke. I think I have a fuel problem. Last edited by OM617YOTA; 08-18-2013 at 02:14 PM. |

Did I miss where you spoke of the gear ratios in your rear end and so forth? Tire size too? If the gears are too tall for your engine you will have sluggish performance on hills and so forth. Is it a stick or automatic? OD?
Haven't read every word so sorry if I missed it.
