Great discussions but how does the Mercedes GP relay control the amount of time they glow? If I remember correctly they come off and on for the first few minutes after start up but I'm just not sure how it measured the time it ran.

I like that variable aftermarket relay. If I can figure out a way to integrate it with the key that is the easiest and takes up less space on my dash but then I run into problems being able to run accessories like the radio when the car is off without burning out the glow plugs and draining the battery as I don't have a second accessory switch like when you turn the key backwards like newer cars.

If I end up making a run to Vancouver I would be more than happy to bring it back down to Salem depending on what car/truck we are driving. If we are in the inlaws KIA there isn't a lot of room but it does have a surf rack.

What's the timer for? The stock glow module already has a timer that is more sophisticated. All you need to do is disconnect the wire to the ignition switch and run it to a push button.

I wanted total manual control and did it with minimal cost, time and complexity. All I needed was a $2.00 toggle switch and later added a door chime warning which was free. I opened up the stock glow relay module and isolated the relay coil and cluster glow light and rewired it so the light is always on as long as the toggle switch (glow plugs) is on. Worked for me. No more draining the battery except for that one time before the chime was added. Car was off and parked when I accidentally knocked the toggle switch on

Ps. I Like to keep things simple. As a backup I carry a heavy duty 6 gauge alligator clip lead in the car to apply power to the glow plugs directly in case my simple manual control ever fails.

What part is fried? As long as the high current circuits are ok you can still use it manually. Get a used one otherwise. Nothing better than the stock one if you want to mod.

yep like I said earlier I plan on gutting the old glow plug relay of all the electronics all I will use is the actual relay the rest will be replaced and run the way I want it to.

that would actually be pretty cool, my closet wrecking yard that have any mercedes is around 75 miles away so until i have something else to do in that direction or i get this thing running on WVO hitting a pick a part isn't going to happen.... i probably should start making a list of all the stuff i would like to pull. Makes me sick when i see someone post that they get this or that for a couple bucks that would cost a couple hundred new.

(You could certainly gusset the sides of your rad guard with the steel for protection, and have headlight loops to boot.) Maybe if Addicted is up this way, he could cart them your way?

Thank you gentlemen! I really appreciate it. You both have my cellphone number, and I'm willing to chip in for fuel.

Cadin, I thought your home-base was Eugene. I drove through Vancouver on the way to and from Seattle not too long ago, next time I'm up that way I owe you a cup of coffee for missing the connection last time.

YV-

I think most of those inexpensive parts cars are back east where the roads get salted and these cars pretty much just fall apart. The drivetrain and the interior bits might be OK, but the body and frame are literally rusting away and just not worth fixing. Around here diesel Mercedes cars that can move under their own power go for $3,000 minimum - I paid $600 for the engine alone for my conversion. Mention veggie oil or biodiesel in the ad and the price doubles.

Hey '617Yota, Right on, I like coffee!

Yeah, I'm in the 'Couv. I was only down in Eugene for a martial arts training workshop, with the Chen Taijiquan Grandmaster, Chen Zheng Lei. He only trains in Seattle and Eugene once a year, I usually head down the night before and sleep in the rig to start training in the AM.

Dang, that's serious stuff! I'm more of a disciple of Mr. Gaston Glock. I hope you have more comfy sleeping arrangements in your rig than just a tipped back seat.

Been daily driving my conversion through this cold snap. Been rock solid reliable and the 4wd was nice on the ice.

Glock would be an excellent mentor! For a variety of reasons, many of them philanthropic!

Apparently he was struck in the head seven times with a mallet by a professional merc, had lost over a litre of blood, and defended himself by striking back only twice. (I guess he is the inventor of a well-known projectile launcher as well...)

Some folks say work smart and not hard, but I say why not work smart AND hard?

Ditto, on the truck, (I still need to put in the Block heater!)

((Oh, and no 4wd yet, I have to get the dimensions and have it sized at the driveline shop. See the problems you saved yourself with the Mega-Rad?))

My vacuum pump relay failed on the way to work today - third relay to fail in this application. The contacts get welded shut and the relay won't turn off, even after power is removed from the kicker coil. Looked up the stock Audi relay, it's a pretty serious monster, these little 30 amp ones ain't going to cut it. I'm a sales rep for an electronic component company, sourcing a replacement will be easy. I'll post what I come up with so others can do the same.
