Ok, I'll rephrase it then. How long has your blower motor worked properly?
I asked how long a blower motor should last, had 44 views but no responses, so I figured I'd rephrase the question.....
How long has your blower motor been working properly (not the motor per se, but the regulator which causes the blower motor speed and everything to work properly)? My replacement blower regulator only lasted 6 years, which is causing the blower motor to go from low setting to high; I can't get a proper lower speed. 6 years is not long enough for that part that costs $250 and is difficult to get to and to take out. Seems like this part should last for 15-20 years. Jeff 1991 300d, 180k Last edited by jbach36; 08-04-2013 at 12:30 AM. |

The one in my 83 has apparently been running at medium speed every time the cars on since the early 2000s. 9-10 years now the dial switch has been broken off and jammed from what the PO tells me. Seems to be doing ok still, eventually ill fix the control issue

The original blower on my 91 300D failed last year at 104k miles. The original blower on my 92 300D failed in 2004 at 151k miles. On the latter, I'll occasionally hear very mild squeaking and I'm at 245k miles.

1. 1985 300D blower motor replaced by me at about 220,000 miles.
2. 1987 300D blower motor was OK when the car was sold at about 170,000 miles. 3. 1995 E300 blower motor OK at 203,000 miles 4. 1996 E300 blower motor and controller replaced by 1st owner at about 100,000 miles; replacement OK with car nor at 290,000 miles. As a general rule, the motor brushes seem to last about 200,000 miles, the commutator perhaps double that. The controller should last forever but as we've read here, that doesn't always happen. Blower in my W201 needed replacement around 200k, was squealing bad and the brushes were dead. Replacement has been smooth/fine. Replaced the blower in my 300SD with an aftermarket over 110k/8 years ago, no problems, still runs great. Blower in my 420sel is original at 147k and 24 years old, has a slight squeak at low speeds but still runs fine. I will take it out and service/lube it soon. My former 300E still had the original blower in it at 164k when I got rid of it and it still ran strong...

With the 80 240D I don`t know, we got the car with 305,960K and the Blower didn`t work. replaced it with a PNP blower, we are now up to 354K and we use the Blower all/most of the time. Have no idea how many miles was on the used Blower as I have a bunch I have pulled.
The one in the 85 300D has 360+K, and has worked as long as we have had the car since 97, and it had 176K at that time. Not MB, but finally replaced the Datsun 720 Blower at 470K miles with a PNP one. Charlie

looks like the resistor regulator lasts much longer than the electronic "porcupine" does...

Can I switch to the resistor regulator?
I have the porcupine one. I wonder if there's a way I can switch. Probably not.

OK, yours failed earlier than usual, so what? it's not like it contains a timer which goes off after a certain number of years. rather, there is a distribution of possibilities and you had worse luck on this one.
if you want to not buy the same part again that would be understandable. there seem to be some alternatives out there.
