Help ! Trying to pull the head off my OM603 for the first time .....

Never done this before. I'm needing to get the head off my 87 300TD - probably a bad gasket, maybe worse.

The FSM has been really good so far, but now I'm stuck. I have unbolted the exhaust bracket from the transmission mount, and removed the exhaust pipe clamp back there too - but the FSM states to 'remove the exhaust pipe at the manifold'. The first place I can see to do this is where the exhaust bends up to the engine, there are three studs that clamp the lower exhaust pipe to the bottom of the turbo/mainfold. But those three bolts are VERY hard to get to and are rusty. Is this the only place to do this? I don't have air tools.

Here is a shot from the bottom of the car, looking up at the exhaust pipe where it joins the bottom of the mainfold.

Spray em with Kroil, they will come off. Be careful with accordion looking piece if you separate it there. Pricey piece that can't be easily fixed.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I've liberally sprayed the bolts with PB Blaster and will be trying to get these off tomorrow. I'll let you
all know how it goes !

I have done the HG R&R without removing the exhaust in the picture. If you can remove the 4 nuts ( underneath the 2 brackets ) that attach the turbo to the exhaust manifold brackets then you will be good.

Just an alternative if you are stuck.

Well - good news - I got the 3 lower exhaust bolts off this moring (after a night of soaking in PB Blaster) - they were slow coming off because of the cramped space, but not a big strain. All came off from accessing from the bottom.

Onward and upward !
