82 240d shifter rod arrangment

I was having a horrible time getting the transmission back in service.

I did a few repairs on the driveshaft and then the shifter rod bushings and then rebuilding the shifter then put it all back together thats where I had the trouble.

I was using the attached picture to decide how to install the shifter rods. This picture seems to show that the front most rod is connected to the center lever of the shifter, the second rod connected to the right side lever and then the last rod to the left lever.

But when I did this things were all messed up. Shifting was very wrong.

After much thought I swapped the two front rods around and now its perfect.

Is this picture wrong? Is it for a 5 speed? Mine is 4 speed.

Thanks for your help!

Actually that does look like its for the 5 spd. Your tranny levers should all be UP. You didn't remove them right?

I had the same problem once when I reassembled my shift rods.
as I remember the longest rod is reverse and its the middle lever on the tranny which I believe is pitched forward when in neutral. Keeping that in mind you might be able to figure it out by trill and error. Sorry I cant be of any more help.

Whunter, yes this may be the correct arrangement but the levers on the transmission, at least mine, are different. They are like in the picture I attached. front 2 face down, back faces up Could this be the early cast iron vs late alum transmission cases?
