Washer Pump Question

Having resolved the MAJOR issues on my 92 300D....head gasket, rust, paint....I'm back to the little things....thankfully.
Here's a picture of the washer pump that I just removed....it was leaking so I replaced it. I'm simply curious....what is the purpose of the rectangular hole? It seems like that's the only possible place fluid could have leaked out. What would happen if I plugged it with some epoxy? |
