Differential Drain Bolt Question

Replacing differential fluid for the first time. Thought I'd start with the 190E. Bolts came out easily, drained fluid. Got bolts really clean. When I install drain bolt, it doesn't seem to go in as far as it was in before. I realize that it should stick out a bit. But what you see is the point where it's 50 Nm tight.

Does this look right or does it look like it's sticking out too much?

If you are not sure. Back it out, check that you have not cross-threaded it and thread it back in. How difficult it is? I never check the torque spec. It is not necessary for trivial things like drain plug. If in doubt, farm out to the expert mechanics.

Did that. Nope, not cross-threaded. Went back in to same point. Thought I might was well use MB torque spec since they provided one.

I farm out enough stuff to the expert mechanics....I'm determined to add this to the list of things I can do!

You worry too much! It's a taper thread and as long as it's clean and threads not damaged and torqued to spec it won't leak.

Haha....you're right! I think my worry is inversely proportional to my knowledge. Hopefully as the latter increases the former will decrease!

Got it all put back together....now on to the next car!

Were both plugs the same size? I seem to recall that on one of my cars, one (the filler?) had straight thread and the other tapered. But I could be wrong.

They looked identical. Unless I'm mistaken 186 997 00 32 is used for both.

If epc says both are the same, then there you go

Memory coming back - On W123, I now recall the two plugs being different. Filler has a straight thread and has a shoulder/head. Drain is tapered like yours.
