Uncommon IP and transmission- 1980 300TD N/A

My neighbor has a 1980 300TD (wagon of course) that seems to be very unique in many ways. It is the goldish brown color (not that unique)

and the henna red (I think that is what it is called) LEATHER interior with the third row seat. The most unique thing I have found about this car is the injection pump and transmission. It seems to have the injection pump that came on the later cars with an aluminum head (like a 190D 2.5).

It has the same trans that an '81 SD would have (722.3XX?) with the electronic speedo and bowden cable:

I have never seen this injection pump in any iron head engine, nor have I seen this trans in this early of a car. Is this a weird combination, or is this common for this year and model car?

looks like the M pump, maybe someone was assembling a drivetrain for some power before your neighbor got it. He should mail that sucker out to dieselmenken for some serious fuel delivery upgrades

This car is definitely all factory. It had around 100,00 miles on it when they got it, and I believe they are the second owner (third at the most).

Type m pumps were found on euro non turbo models.....chances is its a euro car....if there's a turbo its the wrong pump.....strange no vacuum control for the trans....shouldn't there be? Don't think there was a bowden wire only controlled trans...interesting....sure the seats are leather and not tex?

The VCV is on the side of the pump, not on top like the others. The seats are definitely leather.

What's the VIN? That might answer a lot of questions.

I heard about a site that you type in the VIN and get back the specs on the vehicle. Do you have a link for it?

IIRC there was one year of 300TDs that had an electronic speedometer.

You can put the vin into the EPC program and it will give you a report. If you don't have an account (which is free) I can run it for you.

The 1981 300TD Turbos used the 722.303 instead of the 722.315, therefore getting an electric speedometer. I could see someone swapping in a tranny and taking the speedometer along with it...

Except for the injection pump, the engine looks similar to my 84 300D. I am noting the electronic switch on the valve cover and the temperature sensor in the block, driver's side. I put a 1983 engine in my 1985, which didn't have that temperature sensor, and had the funky vacuum switch on the valve cover. If the front of the block isn't grubby, I recall that is where I read the date.

This car also has a -Plastic- radiator tank with the cap on it?? ive only seen metal ones like that . Those are odd custom center caps on the bundts!?!?

A few US cars like my 81 cd came with the m pump--its a US car too. the tranz has the bowden cable. no matter if it has sat for 9 mos it always fires up with hardly any cranking.
Rust free 81 non turbo petrol green in DFW $1800.00

No, I believe that that is the typical 617.91X radiator.

I was just over looking at the car, and I can't find any gray market import stickers anywhere. It has the standard U S stickers on the driver side B pillar. I imagine that if this was a gray market car originally, it would have had Euro bumpers on it. I can see no evidence of that. They are in fact the third owner, and the car was sitting for about a year before they bought it. Whe they drove it home, they noticed a bad vibration from the tires. He looked at them and on the sidewall it read "Made in West Germany". They may have been only the second set of tires on the car.

strange engine combo. i think the car was wrecked, notice the paint under hood and the radiator supports are installed upside down.
