I would think that would be the case. Which is important to get your engine up to operating temperatures once in a while.

Interesting thread. I used to be concerned about the dirty oil left after an oil change, but thought that there is nothing I could do about it. I do everything that I am able to do in order to get the most oil out. I drain the oil when the engine is hot, and usually for a couple of hours (sometimes overnight). I remove the filter cap bolts, lift and turn the cap slightly to allow air to get in. Sometimes I do drain the cooler, but not always. I also don't like to go over 5,000 miles between oil changes (5,000 mile increments make it easy to remember).

Some oil, used or new, is better than NO, LESS oil.

It is next to impossible to drain all the oil.

1) Oil inside the oil pump, actually you do NOT want to drain the oil pump or there will be no oil pick up, hence pressure. Ask me how I knew.
2) Oil inside the IP
3) Oil inside the oil cooler
4) Oil inside some engine passage.

I do not think it matters in the grand scheme of thing. I sometime add 'drained' oil back in when I am down a quart or so in between oil change. In a pinch, I used gas rated oil to top up. I always change my oil with cheap dino diesel rated oil between 3-5K. Don't care if I overfill it by a bit, like 1/4" over. It has served me well. They are my cars, I can treat them anyway I like.

yeah... 8+quarts of total oil capacity, a quart here and there of dirty oil is not a problem. the system is designed for it... 500K miles original engine anybody?
use a good filter, change the oil when it's due, and drive happy!

The concern is contaminating the clean oil with dirty? Reduce change intervals so total average contamination level is lower. Or drain, change filter, refill with cheapest oil possible, start, drain, refill with desired oil. Or, use bypass filtration system for additional filtering.

It may be possible to find a fitting designed for commercial or transit HVAC which will install between cooler line and cooler and has a Schraeder valve. What are thread sizes on cooler?

I can just see someone coming up with an oil transfusion machine...

Essentially take the oil cooler lines and hook those up to a machine that returns the same volume & pressure of dirty oil back to the engine with clean oil...

What about trying to apply vacuum to the hose where it exits inside the oil filter housing? I can't say I've ever looked in there to see if it's easily accessible.

Neither, the entire oil cooler is aluminum.

They make them. We have one for transmissions and some larger companies have them for engines. The largest engines often stay running during oil changes.

Some big-rigs have a system that burns used oil as fuel, continuously and you just add new oil to a reservoir. A filter change is necessary. Some systems use a dual bypass filter that you can shut off one filter at a time to change it.
