Rebuilt steering box installed, now a problem with getting tie rod on...
I managed to re-install my rebuilt steering box on my 85 300TD (W123) I go the tie rods back on but its actually the linkage for the steering damper that goes into the pitman arm that I messed up with.
I must have just damaged the threads enough while removing it, to make the nut go on very tightly and basically stop tightening a couple of mm from being properly tight. I had to use a 6mm (if I remember correctly) hex key in order to hold the tie rod end and tighten the nylon locking nut with the wrench at the same time. It got too tight and now stripped the hex opening in the tie rod. The rod is still loose enough that when I turn the lock-nut the tie rod "bolt" with the hex opening turns as well. So I cant take it off either now. I see for sale tie rod ends for sale, but will this replace the end of the damper? It says its only good for cars with a 14mm shaft diameter. Are they talking about the tie rod shaft? and the two options are right or left hand threads, would there be any reason to get left hand ones? Thanks for any input. I hope I can fix this relatively cheaply. |

I am not sure from the description which part You are speaking of. However, I removed the Steering Damper on My Car sometime in the First Year I owned My Car to clean it and I never put it back on and have never missed it or noticed a negative effect from not having it.
In fact the Car steers easier when doing tight slow speed turns with out the Damper. You can use a Nut Splitter to crack the Nut on both sides to remove it. You can do a Google image search and see what they Look Like. Sears used to sell them and Harbor Freight may also.
