middle of exhaust on ground
 

hello hello. Just got back form my honeymoon. I left my car at the airport's long term parking for about 2 weeks. While driving home yesterday, I could hear a slight scraping noise when going over bumps. A few blocks from home, the scraping noise was constant. I pulled over to see the middle of my exhaust on the ground. I drove the car the couple blocks home.

Now to me it looks like the rubber exhaust hanger broke off at the front of the muffler. Are there any other hangers/mounting point in the center of the exhaust system? Are these difficult to install? Do I need some kind of tool?

Thought I'd post some pictures. Circled where I thought the rubber mount would go.

The epc says there are four hanger points, all at the rear muffler, it would seem.

As a temp fix you can simply wrap some Steel Wire around the Hooks that held the Rubber bits on.

This is likely an other Temp fix but in the Help Section of auto part Stores they have the fat round O-ring type Muffler Hangers. Made in China so I would not expect them to last a long time.

Also inspect up front also.

Great! Well my local pep boys carry the generic muffler hangers. Going to pick some up for a temp fix. So how easy is it to get the hangers on? I imagine there isn't much give to the hangers. Do I need a special tool or do I just use my hands?

I think you have another problem. The center muffler shouldn`t be touching the ground if the rear Do-Nuts/O-Rings broke off. Looks like you have a sag in the pipe. It should be bolted to the Transmission hanger where it connects to the Down Pipe. It is rusted to the point it has caused the sag?


There are two hooks on the front and two on the rear of the rear Muffler that hold the system up. You just have to lay on your back and hold the muffler up to the body and pry the Rings on. I use a screw driver or something like that to get them on.

Here's a pic from the back looking to the front (never mind the oil. Not mine). I took this earlier this morning. To me it looks like it's attached to the transmission. I will take a look in a few and take a pic. I am definitely missing the hangers though. Luckily peps is only a short bike ride away.

Order some of these type of Muffler hangers, they have some chain inside them. these are used on the older W107 SL`s.

I was going to suggest this same thing. I have put at least one of these on practically every 'Benz I have owned. You really only need one, as they will never break. The other muffler hanger donuts can be the cheaper rubber ones. There will be less strain on the others as well, and they will even last longer if just one hanger has the steel cord molded inside.....Rich

Great! Just ordered 4 of those. I did go get the generic donut ones. I tried installing them but the exhaust is just too heavy to pick up with my hand. I'll have to use my floor jack to lift it tomorrow.

Boy, Pelican has a large selection of Muffler Hangers!

So I got my floor jack out this morning and it made the job extremely easy. It took me longer to get the floor jack outside then to use it to lift the exhaust about 5 inches. The exhaust does not sit on the ground anymore. It's back to where it should be. Amazing what those 2 back hangers have to hold up. The hangers I'm using right now are the donut variety. I'm waiting for the heavy duty hangers to arrive from peachparts.
