Turbo used in early 1990's 602. 300d
Hello,
Thank you all for being so helpful as a new member of PP i love all the technical information that you have provided me... I have done so much to my recently acquired 1992 300d. I probably have a laundry list of items that I have done to the car already. I have owned the car just shy of a year. IT was really beat down from the previous owners neglect. I love the old diesel it it really has grown on my Ok here I the question that I have and wondering if any one can answer this What type of turbo was used in the 602. engines.... I knew(thought) that it was Garret T3....... I was planning on rebuilding the turbo after oil in front of the turbo.. I waited a few months. Recently i notice that the turbo crossover pipe where the egr and air rec valve are coated wit oil not to bad but coated no the less and the egr valve has a lot of oil and sludge in and around it. Before all oil build up i have had the car a independent Mercedes to replace the precamber seals and injector rings..... but is still leaking around the #2 cylinder.... thinking maybe the camber is wore out or scoured just slightly Flash forward to this week... Order a turbo rebuild kit to help with the oil leaking around the turbo intake output and all around..... started to disassemble and notice that I dont or at least think I have a garret T3 in the car on the turbo housing on the front of car it has garret M11 stamp on followed by a 90 and 10 looking in the back of the turbo there is a snap ring instead of the bolts and metal brackets on the T3 and the waste gate is not in a vertical position but rather horizontal.... would the turbo been replaced... I do not know if it had a trap ox on during it previous owners and the turbo was replaced with whatever they had laying around that day.... also what is concerning is that the waste gate line if feeding directly from the vacuum pump.... which i believe is wrong cause after reading many posts it should never be directly connected... cause the waste gate opens via EDS pressure sensor... The car runs fantastic and haven had any issues other then what i have addressed and fixed and seems to have plenty of power and turbo spins up its a little laggy when i give it the beans from stop but quickly catches up.... leaving a cloud of black soot (i did adjust the alda not maxed though) thank you |

It's a Garrett T25, smaller than a T3. No US 602s were delivered with a trap.

I have a 91 300D 2.5. Be careful, with vacuum connected directly to the waste gate, boost can go over 20 psi. My boost gauge only goes to 15 psi but the needle goes way past that with full vacuum to the wastgate. This alone can cause a lot of oil in the turbo input if the crankcase vent is hooked up correctly. Excessive boost causes more crankcase blow by, causing more oil in the intake system. I have my boost set at about 14 psi and everything seems fine. If you have black smoke, probably the ALDA has been adjusted for more fuel than needed.
Get a boost gauge and check the boost. Paul
