Do you *HAVE* to unbolt speedo cable from tranny to pull cluster on w124

The fsm says to and I have previously. But today I'm not at my shop and just want to replace the bulbs in the instrument cluster of my 87 TD . Is there enough slack to not unbolt it from tranny? To me it seems there is.

No but the cable is usually clipped where the steering column goes through the bulkhead.

I do, it just makes it easier to work on the cluster.

I have removed sevral clusters without loosening anything... it's just tight in there.

I agree that is CYA by the factory engineers. Pulled my cluster several times with no issues without doing that. You do have to have to reach around and unscrew the cable from the speedo and there is just enough slack for that.

I have done it a few times without unattaching it at the transmission. Just make sure you push the cable out of the clip in the footwell, and kind of pull/push the cable upward before you go up and pull the cluster. That will give you just enough slack to stick your hand back there and unscrew the cable from the cluster. I usually end up maiming my hand a little bit.

They make us wear these at work whenever we have our hands in harms way.

Not so good for engine work but for interior stuff it can't be beat.
