ALDA is on top of the injection pump. You can get off with 24mm wrench and channel locks or, if it's really tight, use 27mm instead of channel locks. Here's the thread to walk you through it. Yours is a 602, but it's exactly the same.

OM603 ALDA removal instructions

Looks like someone removed the headlight wipers - very odd. Those would have been part of the cold-weather package (ASD & heated seats).

Can you post a photo of the CD player? Doesn't sound factory to me. A scan or photo of the window sticker would be cool also.

The car will be about as quick as a W123 300D turbo sedan. Factory spec is right around 13 seconds for both the 124.128 and also the 123.133... the W123 weighs 100 lbs more, has nearly identical HP rating, but an extra 20 lb-ft due to the larger displacement. Ends up being a wash. You'll need to check via stopwatch to find out if the power is normal or not.

Sweet Ride

I haven't made a post on here in a long time, but this car is worth a post. I love the red leather and the 2.5 engine. The 602 does not have the head cracking issues of the 603 and by 91 it had the new casting anyway. It is a great econowagen in awesome shape for a fantastic price. I am with Dave - send more photos, especially of the interior/stereo. Enjoy your new ride.

The wastegate could also be as simple as the arm from the vacuum actuator having come loose from the wastegate. The arm is held on with a circlip and it may have popped off.

I said earlier the only cars I were familiar with were 85 and older...I had to double check my signature to remember the POS 87 300dt I had. I had forgotten about it. I only owned it for a few weeks because it was a basketcase but man it would fly! I forgot about that. Not one thing worked on that car electrically but it started and ran and shifted great...No wipers and all! lol That thing poured oil, tranny fluid, and diesel...I paid $3000 for it and a mint 1981 Lincoln Mark IV...Sold the Lincoln for 2750 and I think I still managed to get 2200 for the 300d back in 2007..Guy called me 2 days later and said "hey this thing quit running" I was like "No s*%$ !

Cool! That appears to be the Audio 10 head unit. Click here for the owner's manual in PDF format. I don't believe that was factory equipment, not even special order, back in 1991. It's an MF2910, I think made by Alpine, not Becker. Most likely it was an upgrade by a previous owner. It is not plug & play with 1991-1993 models. The connectors on the rear are totally different. Someone had to do creative re-wiring to make that head unit work.

The "high performance sound system" on the window sticker was an upgrade to the standard stereo system. This likely includes upgraded rear speakers with dual, angled tweeters and possibly a few other upgraded components. But it didn't come with the in-dash CD player.

This Audio 10 was offered in Europe from 2000-2002.

I retrofitted it in my E430, and it was plug and play.

I have no idea how they made it work in a W124.

It is not a 10 disk changer by the way.

Gotcha. yeah I was pretty surprised to see that in there I was also surprised to see an iphone/pod cord wired in the center console. Unfortunately it does not work. Radio sounds pretty crappy too

I don't listen to the radio anyway...I just listen for noises..lol

I cant wait til this weekend to tackle this turbo...Looks like I am going to try and gut the egr and vacuum garbage and simplify this baby..I just wish my 72 c-10 was more roadworthy do I could take the 300 off the road a few weeks to do it.

It is plug & play in 1994-1995 W124's with no mods or adapters. In 1986-1990 W124's, it's plug & play if you buy a special adapter harness from Becker. It is not even remotely plug & play in 1991-1993 W124's... major rewiring required, and it often ends up sounding worse than the original stereo if it's not done right.

How sure are you it's running normally aspirated now? Have you checked boost pressure? How do you know the power is below normal? You asked if it was supposed to be quicker than a W123 turbo and I said "no"... and you never responded if the power is equal to a W123 turbo or not. Don't be surprised if you end up fixing something that ain't broke...

An advantage with the Audio10 is that it has an in-dash CD player.

It also has a CD changer port on the back of the head unit, in which you can plug in an iPod cable and run your ipod through the head unit, and the buttons will work on the head unit to control the ipod.

The problem is that the W210 uses Fiber optic cables that connect to the head unit, and the W124 doesn't. I don't know how this is going to work on your car.

Well it doesn't work very well that is for sure...Poor reception AND sound. Cd player has one stuck in it...

GSXR, I will check the boost but I feel pretty confident its N/A because its slower than my 79 240 d was...Except at freeway speeds. Also I am looking at you and your post on this upgrade for making this decision so I will check the boost for sure and get some results. Thanks for your help.

Oh I found my 1990 issue of Car and Driver where they test the new 350sd and 2.5 turbo....0-60 for both cars are in the 11-12 sec range which I think I saw somewhere on here. Im getting a 1/4 mile of about 50mph

REMOVED! Gosh what a difference.. I actually have some get up and go So thrilled..Shifts points are perfect. It really doesn't rev past 3500 between shifts. Shifts have smoothed out. Just a lil puff of smoke at launch but nothing thru the rev band. A big shout out to all the guys I been emailing with...Steven Hutzler especially for walking me thru this am. I love this community.

Like I was asking Steve should I just leave it off? Cover it up? Unsrew all the way and reinstall?

pleased,

Joe

If removing the ALDA restored power to expected levels, you could have gotten away with cleaning the ALDA signal line. On these cars in which EDS controls the wastegate with a vacuum signal, the more typical cause of low power is a fault in the emission control system which removing the ALDA won't mask. I'd still explore a pressure wastegate conversion, but, hey, I'll choose your situation any day I wonder if your car might already have a pressure wastegate. Temporarily disconnect and cap the signal line to the wastegate actuator and see if it feels like a 240D again. Don't push too hard or too long, just enough to confirm one way or the other.

GSXR, are headlight wipers a window sticker line item? Are 'reinforced springs' different corner foam pieces or a different spring unit altogether?
