You can use a 240D/OM616 engine. The later models make up to 72 HP and look just like a OM621.

I am parting out a 1983 240D with a OM616 engine and 4speed manual transmission.

I will talk to the owner about the 240d. He was pretty surprised when I showed him the manual that had the top speeds of this beast. Looks like it tops out at about 46mph in short bursts. He was not very exited to hear all that. Also any of you guys know where I might be able to find details on some sizes regarding water pumps from of the more modern Mercedes 190C 190DC 220B 220SB 220SEB 230SL. The water pump for these look so close to the one I need for the 319d.

Couldn't you possibly stick an OM617 into the van and also hook up an electric cooling fan instead of the stock engine-driven one? That would give you enough room to fit the extra cylinder.
As for the oil filter, relocating that isn't hard at all.
Those vans are fantastic.

I have the original Daimler-Benz parts manual, the big one, with all illustrations. I bought it when I was going to get one of these, but the deal didn't work out.

However, be warned: this manual is not cheap, even though I won't scalp anyone, I would sell it for what I paid plus postage.

PM me if interested.
