I just did the 50,000 mile service on our Passat. Over the last 10k miles it used 2.5 gallons of DEF / Adblue. Cost to replenish? $12. Yes, that works out to $0.0012 per mile.

The sky is not falling and my muffler bearings are just fine

I was out for a walk and passed the local Autozone and some Guy was pouring DEF into what looked like to Me the Fuel Tank.

He tossed the container in the Trash and I pulled it out after He left. Until that moment I never knew the stuff existed.

I also found the Wikipedia Site and then came her to look for some more info.
Diesel Vehicles are getting more and more complicated to use.

When I was in the market for a ML last summer I specifically passed by some 09 and 10s for my 08 because the 08 does not need DEF. The 08 I bought was traded, I suspect, because the cat was plugged right at 100k miles. The PO traded it on a new 2013 ML per the sales guy at the dealer. The dealer replaced the cat and sold it to me. So hopefully I got at least a 100k on the new cat.

The other problem is that they put the DEF tank where the spare tire should be so you get run flat tires. 2-3 x the cost for 1/2 to 1/3 the life of regular tires.

The way fuel prices are going, we'll all be riding in electric cars with windmills or solar panels on our roofs to charge them. Notice I didn't say 'driving', as government mandates will require all vehicles to be completely computer operated!

There are no new standards on the horizon, as emissions, both gas and diesel, are at basically zero now. The only looming standards are GHG reduction, which is government speak for fuel economy improvements.

Regarding the use of DEF in diesel vehicles, the choice is not DEF or no DEF, the other choice is a NOX adsorber, more EGR, retarded timing, more regeneration, and fuel and soot-diluted oil. The Punishment Agency's approval of DEF technology is what makes owning a diesel car or truck practical again, especially when you consider its incidental cost.

Hmm. DEF is a urea solution. Urine contains urea. So, in a way they are related.

Urea is actually made from Ammonia and Carbon Dioxide. But, it is true that synthetic ammonia plants use natural gas as a feedstock and produce carbon dioxide as a byproduct. For that reason, urea plants are usually adjacent to ammonia plants.

I bought a jug of DEF at Mercedes dealer recently. Showroom sales guy says to me as I am leaving - Buying more deer piss eh? I don't think its a misconception, just a common joke.

Studies have found that new direct injection gas cars put out a bunch of PM - something that wasn't noticed before and is much higher than what comes out of the tailpipe of a DPF equipped diesel.
