engine shocks needed??
i replaced my engine mounts in july n all ready my drivers side is shot! it even busted my k member up!
so im have to repair the k member with 1/8 plate n ill b putting something over the mount to keep the fuel off it! Could it really go bad this quick from fuel getting on it? MY MANE QUESTION.........are the engine "shocks" needed? cuz they are BIG $$$$ that i just dont have at the moment! n do they only work under compression or are they for resisting going up as well? i ask cuz im thinking of wedling a washer on the shock mount to keep it in there but i want to to make sure i understand there purpose n how they work.......if they are not need i would like to put the money into other things like oil cooler lines....... |

I cannot imagine the shock breaking its support bracket. Are your engine mounts shot letting it mash the shock too much?

What sort of car is this?
And what type of diesel are you running? Biodiesel will dissolve your motor mounts in to absolute sticky slimy goop in no time. Where is your fuel leak coming from? You'll want to fix that before putting in new mounts obviously.

If you live in the US why not just go to the Junk/Salvage Yard and get some used ones if your old ones are damaged.

i'd not run without the shocks. MB engineers thought they were important enough to include and the motor mounts and shocks work together as a team of components designed to control the movement of your motor.

Welcome to the Forum.
Yeah not sure what car you are talking about. I know the top mount is the pricy one. there is a thread here, maybe MACH4 did it, but cleaned out the old rubber and filled it with Liquid Rubber. Much cheaper. The small Shocks are to cut down of the side to side motion of the engine and cuts vibrations, especially when it is turned off. saves the engine mounts some. List what cars you have down in your signature so we don`t have to ask what is in your Stable. If you have several, list which Carriage it is. Charlie

The engine shocks apparently do not go bad very often. The engine shock MOUNTS do fail. I used Flexane as discussed in another thread to repair the mounts. So far it is working.
I cleaned the old rubber out then put a piece of plastic bag on a 2x4 and screwed the empty shock mount to the 2x4. Next I poured the Flexane and pushed the metal piece down into the mix. A drill bit was used to maintain the hole for the shock. Be sure to use the correct proportions of hardener. A cheap Harbor Freight postage or drug scale works well. Stir the mixture well. I called the company and they recommend transferring the mix to a 2nd container and continuing to stir.

You just ask professor Google &/or use the forum search function.
anyone have a good alternative to OE engine shock mounts I bought mine from Fastenal because they are local & had it available quickly.

Eng shocks are only used on engine shutdown and it's a cosmetic/feel thing not required to actual operation...
