info on starter lockout please

i have a non-A/C (for now) 240D and i don't see any starter lockout switch on my detailed schematic. on a later 300D schematic it seems to be combined with the backup switch. do only some cars have it, or have i just missed the thing? where is it usually located? how truly needed is this device?

On (722.1/2/3/4/5) automatic transmissions the switch is integrated into the selector lever on the tail cone of the transmission.

OK stretch, and my required followup question is, how about for manual transmissions? i see the backup switch next to the shift lever, but i believe this is just a single-pole, single-throw momentary on switch.

No starter lockout on the manual ones. It isn't necessary if you pay attention to what you're doing and make sure you always A. Start in neutral only, B. Always press the clutch before cranking, or C. Both. I go with A.

thank you guys, i didn't understand what it was for. i have the wire in my harness and i would plug it in if the switch existed, but clearly i am going to do without unless i notice a real easy way to add one. i let my friend drive the car today, he left it in 1st, and i tried to start it later without checking that it was in neutral. heh, heh.

Was your car once fitted with an automatic then?

(VIN look up?)

no, Stretch, but i had an engine swap and the turbo donor car was automatic. i'm cleaning up all the extra not needed wiring in the engine bay and i figure this brown/black wire in the bundle with the glow plug wiring and coolant temp wire was for the lockout switch. it goes nowhere on either end, so i was reading a lot of schematics to get to this point. thank you!
