How to dissolve that TAR fomr my intake / crossover OM603 ?

Howdy everyone -

I spent 2 hours yesterday at the Quantico MCB auto craft center, using one of their parts-washers. I was able to do a great job on everything I put in the tank (2 om603 heads, all the bolts and brackets and stuff of my 87 300TDT, etc, etc) - but the one thing that I could not get clean was the intake and crossover manifolds. They were sooooooo clogged up with this TAR, I had to fight even using a screw driver, still didn't get the job done. I have two sets of these parts, the other set only had soot, no tar. This car was fed WVO for 3 years (before I bought it) - could that have been the source of this gunk?

What do you guys recommend for dissolving this crud? I also have it in the turbo neck (where the crossover pipe connects).

I just did mine with degreaser and the steam power washer at my dealer where I work. Looks like new inside.

Try dissolving it in the highest concentration biodiesel you can find.

Check with machine shops if they have hot tank equipment, chemicals and processes safe for aluminum.

You can remove the compressor housing without disturbing the rest of the turbo but I'm not sure you have access to all 6 bolts holding the compressor housing with the turbo on the engine. Mark the compressor housing relative to the center section since they're not indexed from the factory and it'll be hell aligning the mixing pipe and crossover pipe if you don't get it right.

I've seen really bad tar on engines that never saw WVO so I can't immediately blame WVO. WVO has a tendency to foul piston rings which increases blow-by which sends more oily soot into the intake tract for EGR to bake. But again, poor engine maintenance will do the same without WVO.

variouis solutions

I think various solutions have been offered on this forum --- heavy duty degreaser, biodiesel, handheld propane torch, power washer.

The last one I cleaned, I used various scrapers to get the heavy stuff off, then a degreaser, then a power washer, then more degreaser, then pulled small towels thru it followed by the power washer again. I still didn't get it all out.

If you can go grab a cleaner set from a pick n pull that would probably be the easiest way.....I can tell you first had, that wvo tar cannot be removed easily.....the best solution as said, is heat or steam....I had a hell of a time getting it out of my fuel lines, I hooked up a handheld steamer and let it blow the lines out....took for ever, all the rest of the stuff I tossed and bought used that didn't see any wvo.....another option, is to build a camp fire and toss them in it for awhile....

The tar is a mix of Blowby oil and Soot from the EGR that builds up over the years.

I used a Steam Cleaner to clean the one from the 85 300D, had that crap blown on me. Some nasty stuff blows out of it. Be sure to use some Rain gear and Rubber boots.

Getting an Intake from a Junker wouldn`t be any better, they are all the same.

Here is a video of a guy burning one out from a VW.

I watched some of charmalu's referred videos and those guys started a fire in the intake with a propane torch and then blew air from a wet/dry vac thru which kept the reaction going but most of the heat quickly exited the intake. As long as the metal didn't get too hot, this seems like a good way to clean one out. Whether the intake is usable after the procedure... I have no idea.

Spray it with carb cleaner, then use a propane torch and some compressed air to light it on fire and blow the chunks out. It will turn it to crispy remains, which scrape out easily.

the nice thing about the carb dip is ZERO effort.
1. open can
2. set crossover in can, wait 30 minutes
3. turn crossover to other side in can
4. rinse TOTALLY CLEAN CROSSOVER off with water.
5. enjoy pristine clean crossover.

now for the intake manifold itself... that'd be a pain... you'd need a 5 gallon bucket... a metal one, to hold the dip... not sure what to do there...
