Two questions about removing the transmission from my W126 300SD
The car is tbo's old 1982 300SD. I'm swapping in a hopefully good tranny.
1) There is no seal between the torque converter and the engine, right? 2) What order should I take the bolts off of the transmission in? The transmission will be supported by a jack. Top last?

Sorry I don't have answers, but just a question: Seeing as you were just talking about pulling the engine out of your '84 300d, in another post... you weren't planning on using that trans in your SD, were ya?

No need to worry about seals in the TC. It does seal against the transmission but you should not have to replace any seals.

(slaps head) Yeah I always forget... you can go w123 to w126, but not vice versa.

Sounds good. I was actually going to try doing it differently -- instead of swapping tailshafts, I was going to swap speedometers... that way, I don't have to come up with a foolproof way of plugging the oil line so that it doesn't fail when the car is running and I get a 120 MPH speedometer rather than the 85 MPH one currently in the car.
I'm not sure if my cruise control will work, but I don't use it even though all of our cars have it, so I don't care.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the speedometers are much like the tachometers => very different chassis. I don't think they'll slot in. But as you have both types with out have a quick check.
(Here's the story about my plans for a W126 tachometer in my W123 => Help identifying diesel tachometer req'd - want to fit it to my car!)

Just swap the electronic tail housing from the 300SD 722.303 onto the 722.315 and call it a day. No need to mess with speedo cables, etc.
If you did go with the mechanical speedo, there is a speed sensor for the CC on the 300D cluster that could be swapped and wired in.

Something to think about, the Speedometers are geared to the Differential, not the Transmission.
Also a W123 spedo will not fit into a W126 Cluster A W126 Spedo will not fit into a W123 Cluster I suppose with enough hacking anything is possible. When removing a transmission, make sure the vehicle is high enough so when the transmission is lowered with the jack, there is enough room to clear the bottom of the vehicle so it can be rolled out. It's a mistake you only have to make once. If you are on soil, you may find yourself digging a trench...not that I would know anything about that...

While the engine is out replace the oil filter paper gasket. If you plan on advancing the IP timing replace the IP-> block gasket while it's easier to get to.
