Yes, the B2 in the 300D transmission is the same as in the SD.

If it is the b2 piston, would that have caused grinding when shifting into gear? Only did it once. Sounded like starting a car that was already running. My trans shifts like crap, hard shifting, clunking on downshifts. I know it has a vac issue, but is there anything else I should grab off the 123 trans? It shifts great! Assuming i don't install the whole trans.

What is hard about swapping the tail cones?

Work starts tomorrow on it.

b2 piston failed, now b2 band failed?

Pulled the b2 piston, it was broken. Installed one out of the 123 transmission. Had drive, now nothing. I pulled it apart three times. It is seated properly. Compared to the 123 trans, the b2 band has too much movement, leading me to believe the band now broke. It shifted into gear a few times. Drove it down the long farm driveway. Stopped, now nothing. It feels like it tried to engage a few times, moved a few inches. Makes clicking noises when reved up.

The tail cone on the 123 transmission doesn't look like it is going to come off. Someone ruined the nut holding on the output flange. Looks like a chisel was used to take it off and put it back on. I'm going to have to install it with the 123 tail. No hope of my speedo working any time ever.

The 123 trans is actually stamped 126 XXXX. and the tail is stamped 123 XXXX.

Since this is my daily driver, I'm forced to fix it. The novelty of owning these old cars has worn off. It isn't fun anymore. Its rotting away and falling apart.

Don't get hung up on the part numbers stamped on castings - it doesn't necessarily mean that the parts aren't correct.

It sounds like the removal of the nut on the transmission has been half done for you. Are you sure you can't remove the nut?

Only way to get the nut off will be to cut it. The four sides to the nut have been almost totally chiseled away. Almost round.

Well I wouldn't write off your plans just yet.

Sure someone else has made a mess - but it ain't over till the fat lady sings. Those nuts are quite brittle and in a weird way quite soft. If you have one of those hobby drill / grinder things (dremel) then erode the nut away so that you are essentially splitting it in two. If you made a purchase point for a chisel or punch you can probably hammer it off.

If you have to destroy the 722.315 tail housing to remove it, feel free to do so. Just don't damage the rest of the transmission. Put a chisel bit on an impact hammer and see where that gets you. Remember that you have a (presumably) good nut on the old transmission.

The new nuts are about $2.50 at CarQuest in my neck of the woods.

When I still had an auto transmission in my W123, the tailshaft housing had a big chunk broken out of it. I removed a donor housing from a transmission still hung under the car, and someone had already turned that nut round. I slotted it with a Dremel cutting disc on each side, and popped it loose with a hammer and chisel pretty easily. You can still get that nut off.

123 trans is in. Didn't swap the tails yet, just get it back on the road. 123 trans appears to have many newer parts, including the b2 piston upgrade. Someone went through it or had been rebuilt. Shifts well. Just need to work on getting it set up.
