Exclamation Uh oh... do I need a special socket to remove my tailshaft, or can I buy a 29 mm deep

A 29 mm deep socket, that is... I ran out of room in the subject line.

I just realized today that I need to get that tailshaft socket to finish my tranny swap which I want to finish this Monday at the latest... can I just use a normal 29 mm deep socket, or do I need something more? If I need a special socket, is there someone in the NE area with one that I can borrow or rent?

Also, can I use any old flywheel turner/holder when taking my tranny off the engine, or do I need to use some special Mercedes thing? My neighbor has one that he would borrow to me, so I'm curious if it could be used... I'm guessing yes.

There's a store in Hooksett, NH which sells cheap tools... R&R Wholesalers. I was just there today and they have many sizes of deep metric sockets up through 36mm or so. A 1 3/16" socket might work also if it's a six point. I might have a 29mm axle nut socket that I could loan if you can't find another but it probably couldn't stay away for an extended time.

When I asked this same question, I was told* any deep socket will do.

*: If it doesn't work, blame it on Stretch

Cool. Actually, all of my automotive missteps are Stretch's fault -- if he lived nextdoor, I wouldn't be making them!

If it has the later style nut, you will need a 30mm thin wall 12pt deep socket.

If it is an early style nut, than you need a special 4 prong socket .

or if you don't have access to the tool, turn the nut by wacking it with a chisel and hammer.

If you can't find a deep socket, you can just make one.
