when did MB start the trap oxidizer recall?
 

I see service bulletin 359A/NHTSA ID 52431 about the trap oxidizer but no date. Who has records from before 1997 showing the date the trap oxidizer recall was performed, or who has a notification letter with a date on it?

I know they were aware of problems by 1990 because the sales video I have says there were problems with turbocharger wear ;)

Originally is was a campaign to replace the trap oxidizer every 30k miles right from the sale of the car (they knew about the issues from day one!). In February of 1996 they released an updated campaign to replace the trap oxidizer with a oxidation catalyst once and for all.

The 85 California 300D/CD/TD & SD got a direct replacement and the 86 & 87 OM603 engines got a replacement with relocation (trap was replaced with a by-pass pipe, and an oxidation catalyst was installed in the exhaust down pipe).
