1984 190D 5-speed Transmission Bearing Failure - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I have been working on a 1984 190d 2.2 5 speed that I purchased a while back. When I bought it the PO said that the clutch was gone and that it needed to be replaced. The engine was also smoking like crazy but I went ahead and purchased it because the price was right.

I finally got around to pulling the engine/transmission earlier this week. It seems like somebody ran gasoline instead of diesel in the engine. As I unmarried the engine/trans. I was shocked at what I found inside the bellhousing. My question is what should I do to check this thing out further? I know that Stretch has a detailed post and I will take a look at it, but I am just curious if I should be concerned about anything else or if I can just install a new center bearing and continue on. Thanks.

I think that I am just going to clean it up and replace all of the main components. Throwout bearing, pressure plate, and clutch.

take a good hard look at the clutch fork for damage because--

This one was cut pretty badly, but also bent. Make sure yours isn't bent unusually in any way. I had welded this up and reinstalled, and I had a big difference in clutch engagement pedal height, as in everything took place less than an inch from the floor

For what its worth, I put the 4-speed that went with the fork right into service with no issues. I think you should be fine.

Looks like your throw out bearing seized and wore through one of the pressure plate fingers. It would work with a seized throw out bearing....it would make a funny noise and would not last long before a failure like this.
