IP leaking oil into Diesel supply?
On my 240D the compression is in the 380-400psi range on the 4 cylinders. I know I have a little blow by but the fill cap will stay on. It isn't that bad.
My brother recently pointed out that the exhaust smelled strongly of burning motor oil. I've never noticed it because it does not do it at idle or at low throttle. I did start noticing it when in reverse, I suppose when I drive through the exhaust with windows down. It only makes the smell when under heavy throttle, regardless of engine RPM. When following me on his donorcycle on the highway, my brother said he could smell it consistently. At 75mph the throttle is almost wide open. Any thoughts? Other than the obvious possibility of oil passing the piston rings, I wondered if there is a possibility that engine oil is seeping past some seal(s) in the IP and entering the fuel supply? I don't have a great understanding of the 616's IP so I don't know. Thanks for input. |
Some times, the lift pump on the side of the IP will leak oil into the fuel line but you should notice oil consumption....if your not noticing oil being consumed...then I would think you don't have a problem and its just the fuel you are burning....if I get bad fuel, like I have at the moment my exhaust smell is a lot stronger...
When was the last valve adjustment? What type of oil are you using? |
Do you have a diaphragm or piston type vacuum pump?
|
Worn valve guides and seats may be your issue.
The oil pumped onto the cam lobes may be seeping into the cylinder from above instead of below. Phil Forrest |

This is the Lift Pump off of My Car. The 5mm O-ring at the back of the Red Arrow can wear and some Members claimed caused Oil to get sucked into the Lift Pump.
Your Lift Pump may have a simple Rod with a fat end on it instead of the Roller Tappet. If Oil is mixing with your Diesel Fuel it is going to make the Diesel Fuel in your Fuel Tank look a little grayish in color due to the soot in the Oil. All of the responses so far are possible causes. But, from the amount of smoke if not a Diaphragm Vacuum Pump the Valve Stem Seals sounds reasonable. |
Whoops hit the button twice....
|
If your oil level is steady, I wouldn't worry about anything your brother smelled.
|
Oil level isn't steady. It definitely uses/burns oil. I replaced the valve stem seals about 10-15k miles ago. Not sure about the VP. Car was manufactured march of '82 in Stuttgart and has 2 hoses coming from it if that determines anything. I forget which type has 1 or 2 hoses.

And if that diaphragm is torn, oil gets sucked into the intake. Check the hose going from the pump to the air cleaner or intake for evidence of oil if you have the diaphragm pump.
|
oops, my memory failed me. it is a single hose pump.

As far as consuming the oil, it is probably a quart every 1k-2k miles. somewhere in that range. Been a while since I actually measured but it maybe uses no less than a pint every tank (~ $400-440 miles) and no more than a quart every 2k miles. |
