Need help w/OM602 Fuel Starvation
 

Saturday I dove my 91 300D across PA (Philadelphia to Pittsburgh) with no issues. Today on the return trip it felt as if the car was running out of fuel on long uphills. By the time I was 1/2 way home it was clear that beyond 2500 - 2800 RPM it feels like the engine is starving for fuel. I did not add any fuel or change / do anything to the car.

Right now my plan is to change both fuel filters at the engine. However while I'm under the hood want to be certain nothing is overlooked. So I'm seeking advice on anything else that should be checked / replaced.

Other factors are air filter, shut off valve, clogged exhaust, tank filter, waste gate open, manifold pressure not getting to the alda.

Changing the filters should do it.

First go to the tank filter .

air filter - will check (easy)

shut off valve - emergency stop level on fuel pump?

clogged exhaust - will check (easy)

tank filter - see next post

waste gate open - boost holds at 10 when the starvation occurs, switched to normally closed (vs normally open) last year

manifold pressure not getting to the alda - will check (easy)

local advance auto shows both filters in stock. ill be there tomorrow when they open!

After reading other threads I've come to the same conclusion. Two challenges, just filled the tank, finding a seal on labour day :(

But I'm going to give it a shot!

Also going to swap the fuel lines if I can't find a seal and none of the items in NJ300sdl's list work.

Make sure the IP is at WOT when the throttle pedal is at WOT.

Fuel delivery to the pump has to be 100% , even if you find the filter ok, but i daught it, tank strainer it's the first think i'll check, also you can blow air on the lines to make sure you don't have a obstruction but it's rare this can happend , in my case before I was fixing my own cars I had a problem whit a trailng arm on a 300 SD and the mechanic pushed agains a fuel line and colapsed the line , that car never drove the same from that moment for about nine months , all the "experts" made me spend money on all kind of stuff next on line was a rebild transmition :mad: ..thanx to brake job on the rear wheels I was able to see the fuel line crushed :eek:.. the rest is history.

At that 3K it almost feels like a slight buck or hesitation - that's what makes me think its starving for fuel. Feels different than it had when I reached the top end. But that's a good point and something ill check.

Turned out to be the fuel filters. Ran some checks before heading to the parts store w/the Alda over boost disconnected (just in case) and the problem remained. After changing filters I'm back at 0 to 60 in 14:46 seconds and no fuel starvation.

Still plan to clean the tank filter along with buying a spare set of filters to keep in the boot.
