Possible OM603.96x/OM602 A/C Compressor Upgrade & Compatibility Discussion.

I've been doing some research on what possible upgrades I could make to my 87 300TD A/C Compressor, equipped with a Denso 10P15C that was standard to early M103 W124 engines and early M102 and M103 W201 engines. Subsequent 603.96 and 602 W124 engines came with the slightly larger diameter Denso 10PA15C and the M103 W124 engines got the Denso 10PA17C. The upgrade to the Denso 10PA15C on my 603.96 would require the newer support bracket and possible the newer 602 hoses used on the 92-93 124.128 300D 2.5 Turbos.

I was really interested in fitting my extra Denso 10PA17C (from a 1991 103 engine), but could not identify any support bracket that would work on any 60X block. So, the Denso 10PA17C with its even larger diameter will just have to be satisfied occupying shelf space in the garage for now.

It does appear, however, that the 603.97 engines in W140 came with the even more biggerer Denso 10PA20C! I suspect the belt alignment would work if the clutch and pulley were swapped out from one of the six rib models. Even still, the eight rib pulley might work even if not spaced the same since only six of the eight grooves would need to line up. The compressors on the 140.135 are 0002302211 or 0002300011 and the brackets are 6052300342, 6052300142, 6051310035, or 6051310135, and possibly also 6051300035.

I also briefly looked into whether a 606 compressor and support might work for more capacity, but the manifold on the compressor looked too great for simpler fitment. Also, the increase in compressor capacity was not as interesting as the Denso 10PA20C's once I got on that track.

Here are the various sizes. Note that these illustrations do not necessarily have the proper manifold, clutch, and pulley for Mercedes use, but the body sizes should be accurate.

Here are some various pictures of 602, 603.91x, 603.96x, 603.97x, 605, and 606 engines, with and without the compressor support bracket and compressor so you can get an idea of fitment.

Of course, as always, I reserve the right to be wrong, but I welcome any corrections.

Wow, lots of sweet pictures of cool engines I can't afford! Now, what was this thread about, again? :P

2X on the pics!!!!

I cross referenced the timing chain cover, tandem power steering pumps' pulley, and belt tensioner and its pulley between on the 602.962 and 603.960 and the 603.971 engines and they all match up, so the surpentine belt pulley on the 10PA20C and the 10P15C should also line up.

The pullies on the two compressors have different part numbers, but I attribute that to the difference in diameter.

This might actually work!

If you need to take a peek at my 350SDL, which has the 10PA17C, let me know.

Cool. I had not yet appreciated that the W126.134/135 used a 10PA17C; I became too focused on the W140 and its use of the 10PA20C. Given I already have a spare 10PA17C from my 124.230 parts car, I would just need the 603.970 compressor support bracket (6031310035, 6031310235). There are probably not too may of those floating around pick and pull yards though.

The M104 isn't very different from the OM603 so that might be a source of a 10PA17C bracket.

The M103 and M104 are too different. They incorporate support for the power steering pump among other things.

Ah, yes. Gassers don't have the IP annex and big filter mount to hold the PS pump.

i know this is an old thread but do we have any more info on the 10PA17C and 10PA20C? from what i understand, the 10PA17C is on the 3.5l om603's that were in the w126 (350sd and sdl) and it will drop right in if you get the 3.5's bracket. is the rear manifold the same? and the 10PA20C is on the 3.5l om603's in the w140's. if you get that compressor and bracket, will it bolt up to the 3.0l om603? what about it's manifold?

I picked up a 603.971 bracket today y now to be see if I can find a 10PA20C.

BenzTurbo 09-12-2015 03:16 AM

i am currently running the the 10PA17C and 350sdl bracket. fit no problem but the discharge line bracket doesn't match up to the lower rear bolt of the bigger compressor. should have got a new manifold made up with the 350's manifold/ muffler assembly and w124 ends to the condenser and evap. the compressor is brand new and is a valeo brand so not chinese BS. running R12, 1995 w124 condenser with the twin fans, new evap, fresh mineral oil and it kicks ass.

Is that a bracket from a W126 350SDL? If so, then that is the OM603.970 engine, not an OM603.971 found in the W140.

Yes I'm running the w126 350sd/ sdl bracket (om603.970) which uses the 10PA17C. As far as i know when the om603.971 was introduced to the w140 body, it also received the larger 10PA20C compressor and bracket. I have that bracket as well so if my 17c ever needs replacing, i will upgrade it again along with a better condenser setup.
