Egr valve
So i removed the valve and got everything blocked things are going smoothly, my question is do I need the 2 vac canister beneath the air box for anything, I don't see how there would be any vacuum left there. Can I remove these 2 cans and all the lines associated with them? Looks like one goes into the cab and one goes to the turbo? Thanks

Yes you can remove the vac devices under the air box and while you're there u can also remove the AFM which is only used to run those things. I replaced it with a 3" diameter pipe. The hose that goes to the cabin is just a fresh air vent. You can leave it unplugged.

Are you talking about the vac hose to the ARV (137b) on the compressor? If so, yes you can remove it.

I assume 1986 300SDL is very similar?
I will be performing this operatrion on a 1986 300SDL. Are the connections and this diagram the same?
Also, I have attached your drawing again along with some annotations. The red "X" means those items can be removed. The green circle indicates a 5-way vacuum connector that I am guessing can be reduced to a 3-way connector, leaving the connections to 62, 61a and c. Are all of these statements/drawing correct? What about the connection from 62a to a? Can I remove that entire hose? TIA.

Yes, that's perfect including 62a to a. The diagram is from a 87 300d but all the vac hoses are the same. While you're in there, consider replacing the AFM with a 3" thin wall aluminim pipe to eliminate some intake restriction. The afm's only job in life is to help operate the egr and arv.

I did the vacuum system cleanup on my 87 300TD (OM603, same engine used on the late 80s SDs). Just unplugged and removed everything on the right side of the engine.
Removed the Y31, Y31/1 and the associated hoses to 60 (EGR) and 137b (ARV). Pulled the vent line (a) completely out, it just dead-ends under the dash. Be sure to leave the vent line for the VCV (the other a) on the side of the IP alone, that is for your transmission. Everything on the left side has to do with overboost protection or transmission control so be sure to leave all that alone. Extra credit: Remove the hoses between the IM port and Y30, and either clean or replace them. Also remove the port from the IM and clean that out too. That is your boost pressure signal to the ALDA and if it is plugged you won't get enough fuel to support the boost your turbo is providing. These get plugged from EGR induced intake goo. I need to fabricate a blanking plate for the EGR and then pull and clean the gunky intake manifold. Also need to replace the air flow meter with a straight pipe. I wasn't sure if that did anything with the idle control side of things in the EDS system, but if its only for EGR and ARV then it's coming out too. I also replumbed the entire remaining vacuum system under the hood and got rid of some really brittle (and I'm sure leaking) hoses.
