300SD w/ gutless acceleration

I just bought a 1985 300SD and the acceleration between 20mph to 40mph takes anywhere from 15 to 25 seconds.
Is this just something I have to live with or can I improve the acceleration?
Also, does anybody know where I can get seats or maybe a cheap way to rebuild the springs? The previous owner must have had a heavy left hind-quarter.

For the acceleration, clean the banjo bolt and alda boost lines. (Rear of intake to firewall to alda, mounted on the IP) It sounds as if they are completely clogged or the line may be broken.

For the seats, you probably have broken springs. Salvage is the best place and (BTW, the seats are interchangeable) or for new: www.worlduph.com is a source.

Search this forum for threads related to "swimming pool noodles". I'm not sure if it's in diesel discussion or general Tech discussion. People stuff these between the springs as a cheap way to "rebuild" the seats.

I hate to reveal my ignorance, but where are the banjo bolt and ALDA lines?

also check the hose between both sides of your turbo, its prone to breaking at the clamps after years of oil saturation.

banjo bolts are at the rear of the intake manifold and at the alda on top of the injection pump, its the hard yellowed plastic line.

On each end of the boost pressure line (rear of intake manifold and IP alda) you will find a bolt attachment. This bolt has a port through it along with what is called the banjo bolt has a port and special groove for allowing the pressure through. This set-up is very common on these MB's. Once you pull the bolt you will see what I am talking about.

On my 1980 300SD the linkage from the accelerator pedal to the injection pump was mis-adjusted. I had poor acceleration until the turbo kicked in, then decent acceleration. After adjusting the linkage to get more movement on the IP, it accelerates good off the line.
The procedure I used is to hold the accelerator pedal down, just before pressing the kickdown switch (underneath the pedal). Then adjust the linkage so that this position gives full travel at the IP. It's been working great ever since.

On the slow acceleration does it shift properly? If it is winding to higher rpms under full acceleration like you would expect but still accelerates slow that would point to a couple of scenarios. If it is not accelerating because it is shifting too low under full throttle that is another set of scenarios.
Before you look too deep for solutions change both fuel filters (in line and spin on). A lot of seemingly complex problems are solved with this $10 and fifteen minute fix. Dont just take the prior owners word for it that it was done recently.

Hello angst,

I stomp on the accelerator and it does a pretty good job of going from 0mph to 20mph. Then from 20 - 40 it the rmps go really high before it will shift.
I don't know what the rmps are because the tacometer is broken as is the odometer.

I've changed the fuel and oil filters. Next I plan to check the banjo bolt and the ALDA lines as well as the hoses running to and from the turbo.

Wish me luck...

I used to have to say a prayer every time I pulled out into traffic. After cleaning the "banjo bolt" and associated lines and tweaking the ALDA adjustment screw slightly, I now have a "tire squealer."

this sounds more like tranny problems...

my 82 pulls REALLY hard through the first 3 gears, and I am up to 80 too quick to tell if it pulls well in 4th, the 1-2 shift usually happens about 18mph or as fast as low 20's If I have it floored, but it shifts quickly at that point, never hold the pedal all the way down. you have to kind of feather it as the car hits 16 or so, and that should help your acceleration and shifting. if not, you may be looking at cable or vaccume adjustment. you should be able to hear the RPM's and when the acceleration starts to lessen, it is time to shift, try to feather your pedal. you may want to manually shift the car and see if it makes any dif in the accel dept. I usually take my car in to tranny shop, as I don't know much about them, (and I get free tranny work, (the perks of being a computer/ HVAC combo tech)) but there are tons of tech info here on this forum, about it, just search for transmission or shifting problems.

On a diesel, stomping the accelerator usually just gets you a lot of black smoke unless you are up to speed and using the kickdown switch to pass someone. Even then you will find that there is a "sweet spot" where you will get good acceleration. Diesels drive a little different than gassers in this respect.

I would ensure the alda and boost lines are doing what they should then look at the tranny shifting. This information did the trick for adjusting mine: http://articles.mbz.org/transmission/adjust/

Valve adjustment

I've had my 300sd for 4 years. biggest difference in power i found was vavle adjustment (Mercedes Diesel Valve Adjustment Procedure) and IP timing (Injection Pump Timing Adjustment for Mercedes 617 Engines - Topic)
